On the use of higher-order finite-difference schemes on curvilinear and deforming meshes

Two algorithms for the solution of the time-dependent Euler equations are presented for unsteady aerodynamic analysis of oscillating airfoils. Both algorithms were developed for use on an unstructured grid made up of triangles. The first flow solver involves a Runge-Kutta time-stepping scheme with a finite-volume spatial discretization that reduces to central differencing on a rectangular mesh. The second flow solver involves a modified Euler time-integration scheme with an upwind-biased spatial discretization based on the flux-vector splitting of Van Leer. The paper presents descriptions of the Euler solvers and dynamic mesh algorithm along with results which assess the capability.

Unsteady Euler airfoil solutions using unstructured dynamic meshes

Finite-difference procedures are used to solve either the Euler equations or the "thin-layer" Navier-Stokes equations subject to arbitrary boundary conditions. An automatic grid generation program is employed, and because an implicit finite-difference algorithm for the flow equations is used, time steps are not severely limited when grid points are finely distributed. Computational efficiency and compatibility to vectorized computer processors is maintained by use of approximate factorization techniques. Computed results for both inviscid and viscous flow about airfoils are described and compared to viscous known solutions.

Boundary-fitted coordinate systems for numerical solution of partial differential equations—A review

Boundary-conforming coordinate transformations are used widely to map a flow region onto a computational space in which a finite-difference solution to the differential flow conservation laws is carried out. This method entails difficulties with maintenance of global conservation and with computation of the local volume element under time-dependent mappings that result from boundary motion. To improve the method, a differential ''geometric conservation law" (GCL) is formulated that governs the spatial volume element under an arbitrary mapping. The GCL is solved numerically along with the flow conservation laws using conservative difference operators. Numerical results are presented for implicit solutions of the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations and for explicit solutions of the steady supersonic flow equations.
