The physics of one-dimensional interacting bosonic systems is reviewed. Beginning with results from exactly solvable models and computational approaches, the concept of bosonic Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids relevant for one-dimensional Bose fluids is introduced, and compared with Bose-Einstein condensates existing in dimensions higher than one. The effects of various perturbations on the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid state are discussed as well as extensions to multicomponent and out of equilibrium situations. Finally, the experimental systems that can be described in terms of models of interacting bosons in one dimension are discussed.

One dimensional bosons: From condensed matter systems to ultracold gases

We discuss a phase space representation of quantum dynamics of systems with many degrees of freedom. This representation is based on a perturbative expansion in quantum fluctuations around one of the classical limits. We explicitly analyze expansions around three such limits: (i) corpuscular or Newtonian limit in the coordinate-momentum representation, (ii) wave or Gross-Pitaevskii limit for interacting bosons in the coherent state representation, and (iii) Bloch limit for the spin systems. We discuss both the semiclassical (truncated Wigner) approximation and further quantum corrections appearing in the form of either stochastic quantum jumps along the classical trajectories or the nonlinear response to such jumps. We also discuss how quantum jumps naturally emerge in the analysis of non-equal time correlation functions. This representation of quantum dynamics is closely related to the phase space methods based on the Wigner-Weyl quantization and to the Keldysh technique. We show how such concepts as the Wigner function, Weyl symbol, Moyal product, Bopp operators, and others automatically emerge from the Feynmann's path integral representation of the evolution in the Heisenberg representation. We illustrate the applicability of this expansion with various examples mostly in the context of cold atom systems including sine-Gordon model, one- and two-dimensional Bose Hubbard model, Dicke model and others.

Phase space representation of quantum dynamics

We investigate the ground-state properties of a newly discovered phase of one-dimensional lattice bosons with extended interactions [E. G. Dalla Torre et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 260401 (2006)]. The new phase, termed the Haldane insulator in analogy with the gapped phase of spin-1 chains, is characterized by a nonlocal order parameter, which can only be written as an infinite string in terms of the bosonic densities. We show that the string order can nevertheless be probed with physical fields that couple locally, via the effect those fields have on the quantum phase transitions separating the exotic phase from the conventional Mott and density wave phases. Using a field theoretical analysis, we show that a perturbation that breaks lattice inversion symmetry gaps the critical point separating the Mott and Haldane phases and eliminates the sharp distinction between them. This is remarkable given that neither of these phases involves broken inversion symmetry. We also investigate the evolution of the phase diagram with the tunable coupling between parallel chains in an optical lattice setup. We find that interchain tunneling destroys the direct phase transition between the Mott and Haldane insulators by establishing an intermediate superfluid phase. On the other hand, coupling the chains only by weak repulsive interactions does not modify the structure of the phase diagram. The theoretical predictions are confirmed with numerical calculations using the density matrix renormalization group.

We investigate the physical properties of two coupled chains of electrons, with a nearly half-filled band, as a function of the interchain hopping t
⊥ and the doping. We show that upon doping, the system undergoes a metal-insulator transition well described by a commensurate-incommensurate transition. By using bosonization and renormalization we determine the full phase diagram of the system, and the physical quantities such as the charge gap. In the commensurate phase two different regions, for which the interchain hopping is relevant and irrelevant exist, leading to a confinement-deconfinement crossover in this phase. A minimum of the charge gap is observed for values of t
⊥ close to this crossover. At large t
⊥ the region of the commensurate phase is enhanced, compared to a single chain. At the metal-insulator transition the Luttinger parameter takes the universal value K
ρ
* = 1, in agreement with previous results on special limits of this model.

Commensurate-incommensurate transition in two-coupled chains of nearly half-filled electrons

We show that in a commensurate bosonic ladder, a quantum phase transition occurs between a Mott insulator and a superfluid when interchain hopping increases. We analyze the properties of this transition as well as the physical properties of the two phases. We discuss the physical consequences for experimental systems such as Josephson Junction arrays.

Mott-superfluid transition in bosonic ladders

We study a half-filled ladder of spinless fermions. We show that contrary to a single chain, the ladder becomes a Mott insulator for arbitrarily small repulsive interactions. We obtain the full phase diagram and physical quantities such as the charge gap. We show that there is only a single insulating phase for repulsive interactions, regardless of the strength of the interchain hopping and single chain Mott gap. There is thus no confinement-deconfinement transition in this system but a simple crossover. Using bosonization with the renormalization group we show that upon doping the system becomes a Luttinger liquid with a universal parameter $K=1/2$ different from the one of the single chain $(K=1/4).$
