Turbo Coding, Turbo Equalisation and Space-Time Coding for Transmission over Fading Channels

Iterative decoding of turbo codes, as well as other concatenated coding schemes of similar nature, requires knowledge of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the channel so that proper blending of the a posteriori information of the separate decoders is achieved. We study the sensitivity of decoder performance to misestimation of the SNR, and propose a simple online scheme that estimates the unknown SNR from each code block, prior to decoding. We show that this scheme is sufficiently adequate in accuracy to not appreciably degrade the performance.

SNR mismatch and online estimation in turbo decoding

Against the backdrop of the emerging 3G wireless personal communications standards and broadband access network standard proposals, this volume covers a range of coding and transmission aspects for transmission over fading wireless channels. It presents the most important classic channel coding issues and also the exciting advances of the last decade, such as turbo coding, turbo equalisation and space-time coding. It endeavours to be the first book with explicit emphasis on channel coding for transmission over wireless channels. Divided into 4 parts: Part 1 - explains the necessary background for novices. Turbo Coding, Turbo Equalisation and Space-Time Coding: EXIT-Chart-Aided Near-Capacity Designs for Wireless Channels

Decoding with feedback or iterative decoding is an eecient, low-complexity means for \informa-tion handover" in any parallel or serial concate-nated coding scheme and in related applications. Invented twenty years ago, it has recently been payed considerable attention in the context of \Turbo Codes". Iterative decoding has been jus-tiied intuitively, but many question remain and perhaps will resist. In this paper, we will revise the conventional turbo decoding scheme proposed by Berrou et al., and investigate alternatives such as maximum-likelihood decoding and iterative decoding using a \Joint-MAP". The alternatives promise slight performance improvements, but at considerable cost. This manifests the excellent original works.
