The use of alternative modulation to provide Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) is currently being standardized for GSM by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), and is also adopted for IS-136 evolution by the Universal Wireless Communications Consortium (UWCC) in the US. This paper analyzes the system performance of the EDGE concept. Two scenarios are studied: one where EDGE is introduced in an existing GSM system with 3/9 frequency reuse, and one where EDGE is introduced as an IS-136 overlay, using a very limited amount of spectrum and 1/3 frequency reuse. Both capacity and coverage results are provided. Simulations show that the introduction of EDGE significantly increases the user bit rates in both coverage and interference limited systems compared to standard GSM. The spectral efficiency is also increased considerably. It is also shown that spectral efficiencies exceeding 0.45 bps/Hz/site can be achieved when EDGE is introduced in an IS-136 system using a 1/3 frequency reuse pattern. Further, coverage simulations indicate that existing sites can be reused when EDGE is introduced.

System performance of EDGE, a proposal for enhanced data rates in existing digital cellular systems

A novel fully comprehensive mobile video communications system is proposed. The system exploits the useful rate management features of video transcoders and combines them with error resilience for the transmission of coded video streams over general packet radio service (GPRS) mobile-access networks. The error-resilient video transcoding operation takes place at a centralized point, referred to as a video proxy, which provides the necessary output transmission rates with the required amount of robustness. With the use of this proposed algorithm, error resilience can be added to an already compressed video stream at an intermediate stage at the edge of two or more different networks through two resilience schemes, namely the adaptive intra refresh (AIR) and feedback control signaling (FCS) methods. Both resilience tools impose an output rate increase which can also be prevented with the proposed novel technique. Thus, the presented scheme gives robust video outputs at near target transmission rates that only require the same number of GPRS timeslots as non-resilient schemes. Moreover, an ultimate robustness is also accomplished with the combination of the two resilience algorithms at the video proxy. Extensive computer simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

Error-resilient video transcoding for robust internetwork communications using GPRS

Two expected characteristics of future wireless networks aresupport for multiple bearer services, which in turn enablemultiple end-user services, and the parallel use of multipleradio access technologies. This dissertation discusses radioresource management principles to improve capacity for suchmulti-bearer service, multi-access networks.More specifically, it is first focused on how to mostefficiently share the radio resource between bearer servicegroups within one access technology. A general principle forsharing resources in interference limited systems is proposed,and its expected performance estimated. The proposedinterference balancing principle maximizes capacity byadjusting the power budgets per bearer service group so thatthe maximum tolerable interference levels are equal for allbearer services. To verify its validity, the interferencebalancing principle is applied to the 3rd generation cellularsystems GSM/EDGE and WCDMA in a set of multi-bearer servicecase studies. It is seen that interference balancing maystraightforwardly be introduced in these systems, and thatsignificant capacity gains over non-balanced scenarios can beachieved.Secondly, how to best share traffic load between thedifferent sub-systems in a multi-access scenario isinvestigated. The capability to handle bearer services, andthereby also end-user services, typically differs betweensub-systems. The overall multi-access system capacity istherefore affected by the allocation of bearer services on tosub-systems. Based on this, a simple principle for findingfavorable, under certain constraints near-optimum, sub-systembearer service allocations is derived. It is seen that for agiven service mix combined capacities beyond the sum of thesub-system capacities may be achieved by using the favorablebearer service allocations. Significant capacity gains are alsoseen in a case study in which the bearer service allocationprinciple is applied to a combined GSM/EDGE and WCDMAmulti-access system. The bearer service type may be said toreflect an expected radio resource cost for supporting a userin each sub-system. By taking into account the actual radioresource cost, which may differ from the expected cost, whenassigning users to subsystems, further capacity gains areachievable.

Radio resource sharing and bearer service allocation for multi-bearer service, multi-access wireless networks

This paper provides a performance evaluation of wireless Machine-to-Machine technologies for communication networks enabling Smart Distribution Grid operation. A challenging task raised by different architectural solutions for integrating households into the Smart Grid is given by the last mile connectivity. Nowadays sub-GHz wireless networks deployed for automated meter reading offer a reliable solution due to the lower frequency range and flexible infrastructures for outhouse installations and dedicated meter reading service on a low-bitrate long-term interval. By adding more functionality, like demand side management and distributed energy resources at the households into the Smart Grid, broadband radio service are required to cover the higher demands on data rate, message frequency and quality-of-service. Therefore several additional frequency options are discussed for existing broadband cellular systems, focusing on the integration of outdoor, indoor and basement installation of the Smart Grid devices. Within this work, these frequency options for cellular networks are analyzed for multiple installation scenarios based on ray tracing simulation, reference measurements and analytical channel models and a novel channel model for the prediction of the building penetration loss to basements is derived and presented. In a second step a traffic capacity analysis is performed in order to estimate the system performance parameters of different technologies and to show the influence of actual deployment scenarios for network planning of communication networks for Smart Distribution Grid scenarios.

Coverage and capacity analysis of wireless M2M technologies for smart distribution grid services

The provisioning of packet data services with evolutionary cellular networks is a challenge for current operators. For packet data services, two widely used TDMA-based systems, GSM and TIA/EIA-136, will evolve toward a common radio interface. This article discusses the benefits of that convergence. It presents the network planning principles for the common technology, and estimates the network performance with simulations and by evaluations based on measurements from a current network. The article also discusses the benefits of the convergence for implementation of a mobile handset.

TDMA convergence for packet data services

In the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) phase 2+ development, one major activity has been to specify the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). The purpose of GPRS is to accomplish efficient dynamic spectrum resource sharing between data sources that are bursty in nature, GPRS is well integrated in the overall GSM structure, to allow smooth introduction in existing GSM networks. Four channel coding schemes are defined for GPRS, which facilitates high throughput in a variety of radio conditions. The spectral efficiency of these schemes is analyzed in a cellular system with different omnicell frequency reuse patterns (1, 3 and 7). The results show that a frequency reuse of 3 and a code rate of 2/3-3/4 is the most spectrum efficient combination.
