In this experimental study, the cutting performance of ball-end mills in high-speed dry-hard milling of powder metallurgical steels was investigated. The cutting performance of the milling tools was mainly evaluated in terms of cutting length, tool wear, and cutting forces. Two different types of hardened steels were machined, the cold working steel HS 4-2-4 PM (K490 Microclean/66 HRC) and the high speed steel HS 6-5-3 PM (S790 Microclean/64 HRC). The milling tests were performed at effective cutting speeds of 225, 300, and 400&#x2009;m/min with a four fluted solid carbide ball-end mill (𝐷0 = 6, TiAlN coating). It was observed that by means of analytically optimised chipping parameters and increased cutting speed, the tool life can be drastically enhanced. Further, in machining the harder material HS 4-2-4 PM, the tool life is up to three times in regard to the less harder material HS 6-5-3 PM. Thus, it can be assumed that not only the hardness of the material to be machined plays a vital role for the high-speed dry-hard cutting performance, but also the microstructure and thermal characteristics of the investigated powder metallurgical steels in their hardened state.

Characterization of Tool Wear in High-Speed Milling of Hardened Powder Metallurgical Steels

Kurzfassung Die Minimierung der Mas- und Formanderungen von Komponenten aus Walzlagerstahl wahrend der Fertigungskette ist von hoher wirtschaftlicher Bedeutung. Um die Grenzen der Erreichbarkeit darzustellen, ist ein Vergleichswerkstoff mit hoher Verzugsunempfindlichkeit zu verwenden. Um diesen zu erortern, wurde der Walzlagerstahl 100Cr6 durch Spruhkompaktieren urgeformt, dann konventionell weiterverarbeitet und warmebehandelt. Im Vergleich zu konventionell strangvergossenen Werkstoffen zeigen sich bei der Warmebehandlung sowohl nach einer Ol- als auch nach einer Gasabschreckung an dunnen Ringen geringere Rundheitsanderungen. Dies wird auf die durch den Spruhkompaktierprozess erreichte hohe Homogenitat des Werkstoffs zuruckgefuhrt.

Verzugsminimierung von Wälzlagerkomponenten im Fertigungsprozess durch Sprühkompaktieren

Kurzfassung In cold forming several options exist to meet the require- ments of producing specific products, e. g. tool shape and lu- brication. In the field of micro cold working such measures are not available. When geometrical tool dimensions become smaller the microstructure of the tool materials can interfere with tool making and the forming process, respectively. Aim of this work was to produce hypereutectoid Cr-steels by spray forming and selective laser melting to provide adapted tool materials. Spray forming is regarded as a fast primary forming process with subsequent hot working steps. Selective laser melting is a rapid tooling process for producing near net shape products from powder. Both techniques are known to deliver fine and homogeneous microstructure due to rapid solidifica- tion. Powder from spray forming overspray was used as feed- stock for selective laser melting. Results are shown from alloy variations in vanadium, niobium and carbon of the steel X110CrMoV8-2 and their effect on microstructure, mechanical properties and friction coefficient of the materials using the strip-pulling test after hardening and tempering. The generat- ed materials with hardness up to 63 HRC are micro-machin- able to micro swaging tools with working diameter of less than 1 mm. Bei der Kaltumformung existieren diverse Moglichkeiten, um die Anforderungen bei der Herstellung spezifischer Produkte zu erfullen, z. B. durch Werkzeugform und Schmierung. Beim Mikrokaltumformen sind solche Masnahmen nicht verfugbar. Wenn wesentliche geometrische Strukturen des Werkzeugs sich der Grose der Gefugebestandteile der Werkzeugmaterialien nahern, stort dies sowohl den Werkzeugbau als auch den Um- formprozess selbst. Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, ubereutektoide Cr-Stahle durch Spruhkompaktieren und selektives Laser- schmelzen zu produzieren, um angepasste Werkzeuglegierun- gen bereitzustellen. Das Spruhkompaktieren ist ein schnelles Urformverfahren mit anschliesender Warmumformung des Materials zu Halbzeug. Selektives Laserschmelzen ist ein "Rapid-Tooling"-Verfahren zur Herstellung endabmessungs- naher Produkte aus Pulver. Beide Techniken sind bekannt dafur, aufgrund schneller Erstarrung feine und homogene Gefuge zu liefern. Als Ausgangswerkstoff fur das selektive Laser- schmelzen wurde Overspraypulver vom Spruhkompaktieren verwendet. Ergebnisse am hochlegierten Stahl X110CrMoV8-2 mit variiertem Vanadium-, Niob- und Kohlenstoffgehalt und deren Auswirkungen auf Gefuge und mechanische Eigenschaf- ten werden gezeigt. Reibzahlen der verguteten Stahle wurden mit dem Streifenziehversuch bestimmt. Die hergestellten Werk- stoffe mit einer Harte bis 63 HRC konnten mittels Mikrofrasen zu Werkzeugen fur das Rundkneten von Drahten mit einem Enddurchmesser von weniger als 1 mm verarbeitet werden.

The title of this editorial reflects an effort in creating a unique research forum, to harbor fundamental as well as review articles, meeting the forefront of this scientific field. The Guest Editors sought to attract articles on friction, wear, surface properties, and the development of sufficient procedures, to arrest wear progression as well as to indicate mechanisms to prolong the effectiveness of the implicated materials. In these terms it was exciting and rewarding to embrace related papers of scientists from around the world. The concept of wear-related phenomena in advanced materials, along with a short introduction on the subjects, addressed by the accepted papers, will be presented in the following paragraphs

Wear-related phenomena in advanced materials

Spray forming is known as a production procedure recently developed for technical materials, specially for the production of high-grade steels. The advantages of disintegration of the pouring into small droplets associated with rapid cooling leads to remarkable improvements of homogeneity by forming the primary microstructure in comparison to conventionally cast material. These goals are also found in all semi-finished products after thermo-mechanical treatments. Studies of the very homogeneously formed microstructure of a ball bearing steel (100Cr6) and a high-speed steel (HS6-5-2C) show also the avoiding of pores by high consolidation and the elimination of macro-segregations.
