Compilation of inelastic electron tunnelling spectra of molecules chemisorbed on metal oxides

The adsorption mechanism of aminophenyltrimethoxysilane adsorbed from the vapor on plasma grown aluminum oxide and effects of high humidity on the adsorbed silane were studied by inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS). The IETS spectrum of aminophenyltrimethoxysilane contains the bands due to phenyl rings, methyl groups and amino groups. The NH2 deformation mode is shifted to lower frequencies, which may imply that the silane is chemisorbed through the amino group. By exposing the sample to water vapor, the methoxy group hydrolizes and the resultant methanol is removed from the varrier region indicated by a significant loss of intensity of the CH3 stretching and deformation modes. A loss of intensity of the NH2 deformation mode was also observed after the exposure.

We report on inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy of a tunneling metal–oxide–semiconductor (MOS) device over an extended energy range compared to previous results. We have clearly observed the vibrations of the hydrogen-passivated (111)Si Pb center in this extended energy range. The assignment of this mode has been confirmed by a comparison with infrared experiments. Capabilities and limitations of the technique to detect and observe molecular vibrations in tunneling MOS devices are discussed.

An adhesive study by electron tunnelling: Ethyl α-cyanoacrylate adsorbed on an oxidized aluminium surface

Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy is used to investigate the adsorption of dimethyldimethoxysilane, dimethyldiethoxysilane, and dimethylvinylethoxy silane on alumina at the monolayer level. Data obtained indicate that different adsorbed layers are produced when the silanes are introduced onto the oxide surface from solution or as a vapor. Silanes introduced in the same way onto different types of oxides suggest that alumina morphology also affects the adsorbed configuration.

Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopic studies of alkoxysilanes adsorbed on alumina

Thin films of silicon monoxide have been deposited on alumina surfaces and examined by inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy. A strong absorption peak at 2210 cm−1 reveals the formation of SiH bonds in the presence of trace amounts of water. It is inferred that a reaction between SiO and –OH groups to yield SiH bonds is catalyzed by the alumina surface.
