Critical micelle concentration (CMC) is an essential fundamental property of surfactant molecules, as the CMC value provides significant information regarding the surfactant for industrial use. The industrial efficacy of surfactant molecules totally depends on its CMC value. Without a complete perceptive approach of CMC, it is impractical to employ surfactant molecules efficiently. This article provides an elaborate discussion of dimeric gemini surfactant and pays particular attention to the aggregation behavior, that is, micelle formation, CMC, and thermodynamics of micellization. Micelles structures, packing parameters, and properties of the micelles are summarized. The principles and techniques involved in the determination of CMC are discussed. Thermodynamics of micellization of dimeric surfactants including free energy, enthalpy, and entropy is successively reviewed. Superiority of gemini surfactant in respect of their CMC values is interpreted.

Unique Micellization and CMC Aspects of Gemini Surfactant: An Overview

Little work has been done to characterize the effects of surfactant concentration on hydrate growth. The focus of this study is to investigate the effects of gemini and conventional surfactants on hydrate growth and evaluate growth promotion of a variety of surfactants in a consistent manner. The effects of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and DOWFAX 8390 surfactants on methane hydrates formed in a stirred 600 cm3 reactor containing 343 cm3 of liquid were investigated. Solubility experiments under liquid–hydrate–gas equilibria were conducted at 275.1K with pure water and solutions of each surfactant. Kinetic experiments were performed at 275.1 K and 4545 kPa with surfactant concentrations ranging from 0 to 1150 ppm for SDS and 0 to 200 ppm for DOWFAX 8390. Methane mole fraction measurements were taken at various times throughout the kinetic experiments. Bisphosphodiester surfactant is a name assigned to a family of synthetic amphiphiles possessing a hydrocarbon chain attached to another hydrocarbon chain via different methylene chains as a spacer derived from α-ω-alkyl dibromide (1,4-DBB, 1,6-DBH and 1,8-DBO). Synthesis of Bisphosphodiester Surfactants Derived from Tetradecanol and Different Methylene Chains as a Spacer Derived from α-ω-Alkyl Dibromides

Amphipatic compounds with connecting group between two lipophilic groups were prepared by phosphorylating a long chain alcohol (hexadecanol) with pyrophosphoric acid to prepare hexadecyl phosphate. Then the resulting hexadecyl phosphate was used to prepare bisphosphate surfactants with terminal dibromo alkanes viz. 1,4-dibromo butane or 1,6-dibromo hexane or 1,8-dibromo octane using acetonitrile as solvent. The structure of synthesized products were verified by modern analytical techniques viz. FT-IR, and 1H-NMR. The disodium salts of bisphosphate surfactants were obtained by neutralization of free acid with sodium hydroxide. The performance properties viz. foaming, wetting, emulsifying ability and anionic content of synthesized surfactants were also evaluated. The synthesized bisphosphate surfactant with 1,6-dibromo hexane possessed maximum anionic content and showed good water solubility, foaming, wetting, and emulsifying ability compared to conventional analogs.
