Consistent basis sets of triple-zeta valence with polarization quality for main group elements and transition metals from row one to three have been derived for periodic quantum-chemical solid-state calculations with the crystalline-orbital program CRYSTAL. They are based on the def2-TZVP basis sets developed for molecules by the Ahlrichs group. Orbital exponents and contraction coefficients have been modified and reoptimized, to provide robust and stable self-consistant field (SCF) convergence for a wide range of different compounds. We compare results on crystal structures, cohesive energies, and solid-state reaction enthalpies with the modified basis sets, denoted as pob-TZVP, with selected standard basis sets available from the CRYSTAL basis set database. The average deviation of calculated lattice parameters obtained with a selected density functional, the hybrid method PW1PW, from experimental reference is smaller with pob-TZVP than with standard basis sets, in particular for metallic systems. The effects of basis set expansion by diffuse and polarization functions were investigated for selected systems.

Raman spectroscopic measurements in borate glasses have been reviewe. The review shows that the technique is useful in identifying the structural groups present in the borate on the basis of the Krogh-Moe hypothesis. Vitreous B2O3 and alkali borates are extensvvely studied and a satisfactory assignment of bands is possible by a careful consideration of the literature. A cation effect on the borate netwoork is observed. Availaable measurements on binary borates other than alkali borates and on ternary borates are limited and more work is required to identify the structural modifications that take place with composition. Mixed alkali effect is reported only lithium-caesium borade and shows the formation of non-bridging oxygens, destroying the six-membered rings when Li2O is replaced by Cs2O. Fast ionic glasses (alkali borates containing alkali halides) yield the same Raman spectra as the alkali borates, except when the alkali is a fluoride.

Thio‐ and Seleno‐Compounds of Main Group Elements—Novel Inorganic Oligomers and Polymers

Revised versions of our published pob-TZVP [Peintinger, M. F.; Oliveira, D. V. and Bredow, T., J. Comput. Chem., 2013, 34 (6), 451-459.] and unpublished pob-DZVP basis sets, denoted as pob-TZVP-rev2 and pob-DZVP-rev2, have been derived for the elements HBr. It was observed that the pob basis sets suffer from the basis set superposition error (BSSE). In order to reduce this effect, we took into account the counterpoise energy of hydride dimers as an additional parameter in the basis set optimization. The overall performance, portability, and SCF stability of the resulting rev2 basis sets are significantly improved compared to the original pob basis sets. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

BSSE-correction scheme for consistent gaussian basis sets of double- and triple-zeta valence with polarization quality for solid-state calculations.

Results of ab initio molecular orbital (MO) calculations provide a basis for the interpretation of structural and thermodynamic properties of crystals, glasses, and melts containing tetrahedrally coordinated Si, Al, and B. Calculated and experimental tetrahedral atom-oxygen (TO) bond lengths are in good agreement and the observed average SiO and AlO bond lengths remain relatively constant in crystalline, glassy, and molten materials. The TOT framework geometry, which determines the major structural features, is governed largely by the local constraints of the strong TO bonds and its major features are modeled well by ab initio calculations on small clusters. Observed bond lengths for non-framework cations are not always in agreement with calculated values, and reasons for this are discussed in the text. The flexibility of SiOSi, SiOAl, and AlOAl angles is in accord with easy glass formation in silicates and aluminosilicates. The stronger constraints on tetrahedral BOB and BOSi angles, as evidenced by much deeper and steeper calculated potential energy versus angle curves, suggest much greater difficulty in substituting tetrahedral B than Al for Si. This is supported by the pattern of immiscibility in borosilicate glasses, although the occurrence of boron in trigonal coordination is an added complication. The limitations on glass formation in oxysulfide and oxynitride systems may be related to the angular requirements of SiSSi and Si(NH)Si groups. Although the SiO and AlO bonds are the strongest ones in silicates and aluminosilicates, they are perturbed by other cations. Increasing perturbation and weakening of the framework occurs with increasing ability of the other atom to compete with Si or Al for bonding to oxygen, that is, with increasing cation field strength. The perturbation of TOT groups, as evidenced by TO bond lengthening predicted by MO calculations and observed in ordered crystalline aluminosilicates, increases in the series Ca, Mg and K, Na, Li. This perturbation correlates strongly with thermochemical mixing properties of glasses in the systems SiO2-M

n/2 (M=Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, and Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb), with tendencies toward immiscibility in these systems, and with systematics in vibrational spectra. Trends in physical properties, including viscosity at atmospheric and high pressure, can also be correlated.
