A fuzzy multicriteria categorization of the GALDIT method to assess seawater intrusion vulnerability of coastal aquifers

Since incorrect site selection has sometimes led to the failure of artificial recharge projects, it is necessary to increase the effectiveness of such projects and minimize their failure by employing new techniques. Therefore, the present research used a combination of decision-making models, numerical groundwater modeling and clustering technique to determine suitable sites for implementation of an artificial recharge project. This hybrid approach was employed for the Yasouj aquifer located in southwestern Iran. In the first stage, by employing an AHP decision-making model, hydraulic conductivity, specific yield, slope, land use, depth to groundwater, and aquifer thickness were selected from 21 criteria used in previous research. The selected criteria were then entered as input into the classical k-means clustering model. Using the output, aquifer was divided into seven different regions or clusters. These clusters were then matched with the land use map, and some of the abandoned land areas were selected as the final option for implementing the artificial recharge project. Finally, the MODFLOW code in the GMS software was used to simulate the groundwater level and cluster the sites selected, with regards to increase in groundwater level. Results indicated that the most significant increases in groundwater level (43 and 27 cm) were those of Clusters 2 and 6 in the northern and western parts of the aquifer, respectively. Therefore, this approach can be used in other similar aquifers in arid and semi-arid regions to select the best sites for artificial recharge and to prevent loss of floodwaters.

Experimental study on the artificial recharge of semiconfined aquifers involved in deep excavation engineering

Interest in artificial recharge of groundwater using pretreated wastewater continues to increase, especially in semi-arid countries. After the artificial recharge and natural treatment, the water could be extracted through boreholes pumping for direct irrigation. The selection of suitable locations for artificial recharge should be based on hydrogeological conditions, economic evaluation and environmental considerations. Clogging of boreholes that are used for artificial recharge is a serious problem and requires proper planning to reduce it. This paper deals with the investigation of the possibilities and prospects of aquifer recharge via boreholes using treated wastewater. Firstly, the aquifer recharge techniques, the proposed criteria of waste and the clogging effect are presented. Secondly, the possibility of application of artificial recharge in the South-Eastern Mesaoria aquifer of Cyprus is examined. Based on hydrogeological results, artificial recharge using tertiary treated wastewater via boreholes is one of the options available for increasing the groundwater reserves of this aquifer. The recycled water will infiltrate through gravel pack, providing favorable conditions for ventilation and laminar flow due to small water flow velocity. The treatment works include the removal of the fat, oil and grease (FOG) and cyanides (CN−) content in order to meet the upper acceptable limits.

Groundwater Balance, Safe Yield and Recharge Feasibility in a Semi-Arid Environment: A Case Study from Western Part of Iran

The economic development of the Patras Industrial Area is influenced by both the availability and the seasonal variability of water resources. Groundwater from the deep confined aquifer is the major source of water for the industries located in this area. During the 1980s, over-pumping combined with prolonged dry periods has lowered the groundwater level. The paper presents the results of groundwater recharge testing in the confined aquifer using three deep boreholes and injection rates ranging from 30.5 to 63.5 m3/h. The groundwater level rose by more than 3.5 m in the recharge boreholes and 1 m in those 0.5 km away. The field experiments provided useful guidance on the proper planning of pilot tests, data monitoring and analysis, which can also be applied to other regions with similar conditions. Based on the hydrogeological conditions a groundwater flow model was successfully used to predict the aquifer system response. The work confirms that aquifer recharge is an environmentally acceptable solution, as part of an integral water resources management plan.
