Journal ArticleDOI

The carrying capacity of ecosystems

TL;DR: It is proposed that the CC is the limit of growth or development of each and all hierarchical levels of biological integration, beginning with the population, and shaped by processes and interdependent relationships between finite resources and the consumers of those resources.
Journal ArticleDOI

Marine extinctions revisited

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that previous estimates have not fully taken into account critical uncertainties such as naturally variable geographical distributions, and have misinterpreted documentary evidence, and suggest that when integrating future checklists of marine extinct species, there needs to be a more rigorous use of the terminology of extinction, and participation by specialists in each of the particular taxonomic groups involved.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of North Atlantic climate variability on hawksbill turtles in the Southern Gulf of Mexico

TL;DR: The results suggest that the long-term population of hawksbill turtles in the SGM are related to a basin-wide, quasi-decadal environmental fluc- tuation in the North Atlantic, which may be influenced by trophic interactions that are coupled to a decadal alternation between favourable and unfavourable ecological conditions occurring on basin- wide scales.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Gulf of California Large Marine Ecosystem: Fisheries and other natural resources

TL;DR: The Gulf of California Large Marine Ecosystem (GoC-LME) is considered one of the top ten marine biodiversity hotspots in the world as discussed by the authors, with a high diversity of marine species including endemics and endangered, threatened or protected species.
Journal ArticleDOI

Climate Change Effects on Aquatic Ecosystems and the Challenge for Fishery Management: Pink Shrimp of the Southern Gulf of Mexico

TL;DR: In this paper, a case study of the Pink Shrimp fishery in the Southern Gulf of Mexico has been presented to illustrate how to face new scientific challenges for fisheries management advice.
