Spatial information related to an audio signal is coded in a bit stream which can be transmitted to a decoder or recorded on a data carrier. The data structures can be fixed or varying. An indicator of the type of data structure is included in the bit stream so that the decoder can determine types of data structures and start the corresponding decoding process.
