Lattice structures, which are also known as architected cellular structures, have been applied in various industrial sectors, owing to their fascinated performances, such as low elastic modulus, high stiffness-to-weight ratio, low thermal expansion coefficient, and large specific surface area. The lattice structures fabricated by conventional manufacturing technologies always involve complicated process control, additional assembly steps, or other uncontrollable factors. Furthermore, limited types of unit cells can be used to construct lattice structures when using conventional processes. Fortunately, additive manufacturing technology, based on a layer-by-layer process from computer-aided design models, demonstrates the unique capability and flexibility and provides an ideal platform in manufacturing complex components like lattice structures, resulting in an effective reduction in the processing time to actual application and minimum of material waste. Therefore, additive manufacturing relieves the constraint of structure design and provides accurate fabrication for lattice structures with good quality. This work systematically presents an overview of conventional manufacturing methods and novel additive manufacturing technologies for metallic lattice structures. Afterward, the design, optimization, a variety of properties, and applications of metallic lattice structures produced by additive manufacturing are elaborated. By summarizing state-of-the-art progress of the additively manufactured metallic lattice structures, limitations and future perspectives are also discussed.

Corrosion behavior and characteristics of passive films of laser powder bed fusion produced Ti–6Al–4V in dynamic Hank’s solution

Titanium alloys are used in different industries like biomedical, aerospace, aeronautic, chemical, and naval. Those industries have high requirements with few damage tolerances. Therefore, they are necessary to use materials that present fatigue, mechanical, and corrosion resistance. Although Ti-alloys are material with high performance, they are exposed to corrosion in marine and industrial environments. This research shows the corrosion behavior of three titanium alloys, specifically Ti CP2, Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo, and Ti-6Al-4V. Alloys were exposed on two electrolytes to a 3.5 wt % H2SO4 and NaCl solutions at room temperature using cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP) and electrochemical noise (EN) according to ASTM G61 and ASTM G199 standards. CPP technique was employed to obtain electrochemical parameters as the passivation range (PR), corrosion type, passive layer persistence, corrosion potential (Ecorr), and corrosion rate. EN was analyzed by power spectral density (PSD) in voltage. Results obtained revealed pseudopassivation in CPP and PSD exposed on NaCl for Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo, indicating instability and corrosion rate lower. However, Ti-6Al-4V presented the highest corrosion rate in both electrolytes. Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo revealed pseudopassivation in CPP and PSD in NaCl, indicating a passive layer unstable. However, the corrosion rate was lower in both solutions.

Electrical stimulation of titanium to promote stem cell orientation, elongation and osteogenesis

The high specific strength, good corrosion resistance, and great biocompatibility make titanium and its alloys the ideal materials for biomedical metallic implants. Ti-6Al-4V alloy is the most employed in practical biomedical applications because of the excellent combination of strength, fracture toughness, and corrosion resistance. However, recent studies have demonstrated some limits in biocompatibility due to the presence of toxic Al and V. Consequently, scientific literature has reported novel biomedical β-Ti alloys containing biocompatible β-stabilizers (such as Mo, Ta, and Zr) studying the possibility to obtain similar performances to the Ti-6Al-4V alloys. The aim of this review is to highlight the corrosion resistance of the passive layers on biomedical Ti-6Al-4V and β-type Ti alloys in the human body environment by reviewing relevant literature research contributions. The discussion is focused on all those factors that influence the performance of the passive layer at the surface of the alloy subjected to electrochemical corrosion, among which the alloy composition, the method selected to grow the oxide coating, and the physicochemical conditions of the body fluid are the most significant.
