Computer Gaming and Interactive Simulations for Learning: A Meta-Analysis.

: This report documents a review of 48 empirical research articles on the effectiveness of instructional games. It also includes summaries of 26 other review articles and 31 theoretical articles on instructional gaming. Eased on this review the following 5 conclusions and 4 recommendations are provided. Conclusions: (1) The empirical research on the instructional effectiveness of games is fragmented, filled with ill defined terms, and plagued with methodological flaws. (2) Some games provide effective instruction for some tasks some of the time, but these results may not be generalizable to other games or instructional programs. (3) No evidence indicates that games are the preferred instructional method in all situations. (4) Instructional games are more effective if they are embedded in instructional programs that include debriefing and feedback. (5) Instructional support during play increases the effectiveness of instructional games. Recommendations: (1) The decision to use a game for instruction should be based on a detailed analysis of learning requirements and tradeoffs among alternate instructional approaches. (2) Program managers and procurement officials should insist that instructional game developers demonstrate how their game will support instructional objectives. (3) Games should be used as adjuncts and aids, not as stand-alone instruction. (4) Instructor-less a roaches (e.g., web-based instruction) must include all "instructor functions."

Applying Data Mining Techniques to e-Learning Problems

Several hypermedia environments have been developed in the last years with the intention of promoting the acquisition of knowledge on a wide range of topic and developing problem-solving abilities. However, there are many different and sometimes conflicting claims about the capability of these environments to promote meaningful learning. We have developed a hypermedia learning environment with a tutorial component that exploits Artificial Intelligence techniques. This hypermedia, called Logiocando, targets a special category of users, namely children of the fourth level of primary school (9-10 years old), to teach them basic concepts of logic. Two empirical evaluations of the educational impact of Logiocando have been performed. Such experiments compared two teaching approaches: the computer-based one that relies on the hypermedia system, and the traditional one that relies on classroom instruction. The studies involved a large sample of pupils of primary school. Results showed that Logiocando can certainly be considered a valid support in the process of learning and deepening logic knowledge, provided that children are adequately motivated.

Evaluating the Educational Impact of a Tutoring Hypermedia for Children

Over the last decade, medical education changed from traditional teaching methods to telematic and networking scholar and e-learning approach. The objective of the present systematic review was to evaluate the effectiveness and teachers/student's acceptability of e-learning applied to the field of orthodontics and paediatric dentistry. A database search of the literature was conducted on PubMed and Embase databases from January 2005 to May 2021. A total of 172 articles were identified by the electronic search, while a total of 32 papers were selected for qualitative analysis. Overall, 19 articles investigated the effectiveness of e-learning, and no difference of acceptability was reported between e-learning and traditional methods for a wide part of the articles selected. A total of 25 papers provided a satisfaction questionnaire for learners and all were positive in their attitude towards e-learning. The results showed that e-learning is an effective method of instruction, complementing the traditional teaching methods, and learners had a positive attitude and perception. The evidence of the present study reported a high level of acceptability and knowledge level of e-learning techniques, compared to frontal lecture methods, in the fields of orthodontics and paediatric dentistry.

Education Technology in Orthodontics and Paediatric Dentistry during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Systematic Review.

One present goal of researchers and developers is to design software tools that make learning materials available online in an educationally effective manner. We face the twofold challenge of implementing advanced e-learning functionalities, though designing their interface so as to provide an easy interaction grasping the students’ interest. A poorly designed interface makes students spend more time in learning it than in mastering the provided knowledge, so becoming a barrier to effective learning. In this context, both User-Centered Design (UCD) and Learner-Centered Design (LCD) guidelines are needed; it is also important to devise suited evaluation tools, able to help in identifying usability, and, more in general, accessibility flaws. Such tools must be designed bearing in mind the specific characteristics of e-learning applications. Traditional heuristic evaluation appears too general and subjective. In this paper, we propose a set of guidelines and criteria for e-learning platforms (containers) and for educational modules (contents), to be used within the SUE (Systematic Usability Evaluation) inspection. We point out that human factors experts can primarily evaluate “syntactic” aspects of applications. Experts of education science and domain experts are to be involved for a more comprehensive evaluation.

Towards Guidelines for Usability of e-Learning Applications

The use of technology to support collaborative tasks and learning is at present one of the central themes of research into computer education. Recent experiences have demonstrated that computer-mediated peer interaction is in some contexts more effective than face-to-face communication. The present work aims to make a quantitative and qualitative assessment of the peer-to-peer communication fostered by the use of a Web-based environment to support cooperative learning of geometry. In line with other experiences conducted internationally, our results confirm that the use of technological support to stimulate communication has positive effects not only on the quality of the interaction but also on the quality of the learning gain of the individual members making up the cooperative community.

Can a CSCL environment promote effective interaction

In this paper, we propose the use of a neuro-fuzzy strategy to develop a Web personalization framework for the dynamic suggestion of URLs retained interesting for the currently connected users. In particular, a hybrid strategy exploiting the combination of the fuzzy logic with the neural paradigm is proposed in order to discover useful knowledge from session data identified from the analysis of log files and represent it in a set of fuzzy rules expressed in an interpretable form.
