SPIN is an efficient verification system for models of distributed software systems. It has been used to detect design errors in applications ranging from high-level descriptions of distributed algorithms to detailed code for controlling telephone exchanges. The paper gives an overview of the design and structure of the verifier, reviews its theoretical foundation, and gives an overview of significant practical applications.

Review: A survey on security issues in service delivery models of cloud computing

Our goal in this paper is to introduce and motivate a methodology, called Tropos,1 for building agent oriented software systems. Tropos is based on two key ideas. First, the notion of agent and all related mentalistic notions (for instance goals and plans) are used in all phases of software development, from early analysis down to the actual implementation. Second, Tropos covers also the very early phases of requirements analysis, thus allowing for a deeper understanding of the environment where the software must operate, and of the kind of interactions that should occur between software and human agents. The methodology is illustrated with the help of a case study. The Tropos language for conceptual modeling is formalized in a metamodel described with a set of UML class diagrams.

Tropos: An Agent-Oriented Software Development Methodology

Over the Internet today, computing and communications environments are significantly more complex and chaotic than classical distributed systems, lacking any centralized organization or hierarchical control. There has been much interest in emerging Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network overlays because they provide a good substrate for creating large-scale data sharing, content distribution, and application-level multicast applications. These P2P overlay networks attempt to provide a long list of features, such as: selection of nearby peers, redundant storage, efficient search/location of data items, data permanence or guarantees, hierarchical naming, trust and authentication, and anonymity. P2P networks potentially offer an efficient routing architecture that is self-organizing, massively scalable, and robust in the wide-area, combining fault tolerance, load balancing, and explicit notion of locality. In this article we present a survey and comparison of various Structured and Unstructured P2P overlay networks. We categorize the various schemes into these two groups in the design spectrum, and discuss the application-level network performance of each group.

A survey and comparison of peer-to-peer overlay network schemes

This document presents a Services Research Roadmap that launches four pivotal, inherently related, research themes to Service-Oriented Computing (SOC): service foundations, service composition, service management and monitoring and service-oriented engineering. Each theme is introduced briefly from a technology, state of the art and scientific challenges standpoint. From the technology standpoint a comprehensive review of state of the art, standards, and current research activities in each key area is provided. From the state of the art the major open problems and bottlenecks to progress are identified. 

During the during seminar each core theme was initially introduced by a leading expert in the field who described the state of the art and highlighting open problems and important research topics for the SOC community to work on in the future. These experts were then asked to coordinate parallel workgroups that were entrusted with an in-depth analysis of the research opportunities and needs in the respective theme. The findings presented in this summary report build on the advice of those panels of experts from industry and academia who participated in this Dagstuhl Seminar and met at other occasions during the past three years, e.g., at the International Conference on Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC, see www.icsoc.org). These experts represent many disciplines including distributed computing, database and information systems, software engineering, computer architectures and middleware and knowledge representation.

Integrating SAT solvers with domain-specific reasoners

An electric boiler includes a first electrode disposed within a chamber and comprising an upwardly oriented water nozzle surrounded by a convolute electrode member. A second electrode is disposed within the chamber vertically above the first electrode and has a bottom center opening for receiving water from the nozzle and a dome for redirecting the same radially outwardly. The second electrode also includes an annular water receptor surrounding said opening and having a plurality of drain openings spaced from the center opening and a plurality of pipe sections of different lengths disposed respectively in said openings for discharging water downwardly onto the convolute electrode member. Control means is connected to the nozzle for varying the water delivery rate therefrom in response to steam pressure in said chamber.

Publisher Summary Scheduling addresses the problem of performing a given set of actions using a limited number of resources in a limited amount of time. A resource is an entity that needs to be borrowed or consumed, such as a tool, a machine, or energy, to perform an action. Planning and scheduling are closely related problems. In a simple decomposition scheme, planning appears to be an upstream problem that needs to be solved before scheduling. Planning focuses on the causal reasoning for finding the set of actions needed to achieve the goal, while scheduling concentrates on time and resource allocation for this set of actions. This chapter focuses on an integrated approach that searches for a scheduled plan in which the resource allocation and the action scheduling decision are taken into account while planning. This approach is developed as a continuation of the temporal planning techniques.
