Cavitation is a challenging flow abnormality that leads to undesirable effects on the energy performance of the centrifugal pump and the reliable operation of the pump system. The onset and mechanism of a phenomenon that results in unsteady cavitation must be realised to ensure a reliable operation of pumps under the cavitation state. This study focuses on cavitation instability at normal flow rate, at which point the unsteady cavitation occurs as the available net positive suction head (NPSHa) falls below 5.61 m for the researched pump. An ameliorative algorithm–united algorithm for cavitation vibration analysis is proposed on the basis of short time Fourier transform (STFT) and Wigner–Ville distribution (WVD). The STFT–WVD method is then tested using vibration data measured from the centrifugal pump. The relationship between vibration and suction performance indicates that the inception and development of cavitation can be effectively detected by the distribution and intensity of the united algorithm at the testing points. Intermediate frequency components at approximately 6 kHz fluctuate initially with the development of cavitation. A time–frequency characteristic is found to be conducive to monitoring the cavitation performance of centrifugal pumps.

An experimental study on the cavitation vibration characteristics of a centrifugal pump at normal flow rate

This review mainly summarizes the latest developments in the internal flow field and external characteristics of centrifugal pumps. In particular, the latest findings of centrifugal pumps focused on turbulence and cavitation models, flow visualization methods, and fault detection based on noise and vibration. The external characteristics, cavitation, and vibration of the centrifugal pump were extensively discussed. In addition, advanced multi-objective optimization methods for improving impeller’s efficiency and reducing net positive suction head (NPSH) were briefed. Although some progress was made in this field, there remain many unsolved problems, such as monitoring and modeling of cavitation, rotational stall phenomenon, and discrepancies between simulation and measurement. In the future, researchers are encouraged to employ multi-dimensional flow visualization technologies and high-performance computing facilities to advance existing understandings on these issues and create new research directions.

Internal flow structure, fault detection, and performance optimization of centrifugal pumps

Cavitation has a significant effect on the flow fields and structural behaviors of a centrifugal pump. In this study, the unsteady flow and structural behaviors of a centrifugal pump are investigated numerically under different cavitation conditions. A strong two-way coupling fluid-structure interaction simulation is applied to obtain interior views of the effects of cavitating bubbles on the flow and structural dynamics of a pump. The renormalization-group k-e turbulence model and the Zwart–Gerbe–Belamri cavitation model are solved for the fluid side, while a transient structural dynamic analysis is employed for the structure side. The different cavitation states are mapped in the head-net positive suction head (H-NPSH) curves and flow field features inside the impeller are fully revealed. Results indicate that cavitating bubbles grow and expand rapidly with decreasing NPSH. In addition, the pressure fluctuations, both in the impeller and volute, are quantitatively analyzed and associated with the cavitation states. It is shown that influence of the cavitation on the flow field is critical, specifically in the super-cavitation state. The effect of cavitation on the unsteady radial force and blade loads is also discussed. The results indicate that the averaged radial force increased from 8.5 N to 54.4 N in the transition progress from an onset cavitation state to a super-cavitation state. Furthermore, the structural behaviors, including blade deformation, stress, and natural frequencies, corresponding to the cavitation states are discussed. A large volume of cavitating bubbles weakens the fluid forces on the blade and decreases the natural frequencies of the rotor system. This study could enhance the understanding of the effects of cavitation on pump flow and structural behaviors.

Unsteady Flow and Structural Behaviors of Centrifugal Pump under Cavitation Conditions

A combined numerical and experimental method study was performed to detect the inner flow state for a type of centrifugal pump. It was found that the inlet attack angles of blades in an impeller have a great influence on the flow instabilities in a centrifugal pump. The mechanism of the rotating stall in the impeller channel was explained. Meanwhile, flow state identification with vibration (FSIV) was proposed to detect the flow instabilities in a centrifugal pump. The relationship between the external vibration and the inner flow state has been established by FSIV. The characteristics and mechanism of the vibration produced by the flow instabilities in a centrifugal pump were investigated. It was found that the hump, the rotating stall, the backflow, the occurrence of unstable flow, and the cavitation in the centrifugal pump can be effectively detected by applying the vibration signals, which helps to obtain safe and steady operating conditions for the system.

Detection of the Flow State for a Centrifugal Pump Based on Vibration

In order to investigate the mechanism and the characteristics of the noise induced by unstable flow in a centrifugal pump, the internal flow characteristics in the pump were numerically researched, and the acoustic pressure fluctuations at the pump inlet and outlet were experimentally investigated. Obvious corresponding relationships between the flow instabilities, the cavitation and the noise were established. It was found that the rotating stall, the backflow, the hump, the occurrence of unstable flow and the cavitation in such a centrifugal pump were effectively detected through the noise, which could help to provide fundamental information on flow instabilities and guarantee safe and steady operating conditions for the system. The recirculation and prewhirl regions in the pump upstream pipe, which were caused by the backflow and the rotation of the impeller, presented the circumferential movement with a spiral shape, causing apparent broadband fluctuations at low frequency band of the acoustic pressure. The backflow and rotating stall could also result in broadband fluctuations of the pump outlet noise, which was distributed from 100 Hz to 150 Hz. Meanwhile, the broadband fluctuations of the pump outlet acoustic pressure distributed in the low frequency range, which was produced by the occurrence of cavitation, moved to the lower frequency band as the flow rate increased. The enhanced broadband fluctuations of the pump inlet and outlet noise distributed from 1 kHz to 6 kHz were caused by the coupling between the cavitation-induced noise and the system-produced noise. The broadband fluctuations of the pump inlet noise distributed between 6 kHz and 9 kHz were regarded as the typical frequency band of cavitation in the centrifugal pump.

Investigation of the Noise Induced by Unstable Flow in a Centrifugal Pump

Numerical simulation and experimental method are combined to investigate the pump inlet and outlet pressure fluctuations, the vibration characteristics and the internal flow instabilities under the unsteady cavitation condition in a centrifugal pump. It is found that the unsteady cavitation starts to generate as the NPSHa is lower than 5.93 m. Apparent asymmetric and uneven cavity volume distribution on each blade and in the impeller can be observed as the NPSHa decreases from 4.39 m to 1.44 m, which includes the cavitation develops from cavitation surge, rotating cavitation to asymmetric cavitation. The flow vortexes in each blade channel are produced in the cavity trailing edges by the shedding and collapse of cavitation, which interfere with each other and aggravate the flow instabilities. The dominant frequencies of the pump inlet and outlet pressure fluctuations are the shaft frequency and blade passing frequency under the unsteady cavitation conditions, respectively. Broadband pulses are obtained from both the pump inlet and outlet pressure pulsations, which results from the random shedding and collapse of unsteady cavitation bubbles. Obvious corresponding relationship between the root mean squares of the vibration measured in different positions and the suction performance curve is found under both the non-cavitation and unsteady cavitation conditions.
