An elongated web of bag-making material (S) is bent into a tubular form by a former (2), transported along a path (A), is filled with articles (W) and sealed by a transverse sealer (10) transversely to its direction of motion. A pair of seal jaws (20) supported by rotary arms (12) are rotated in mutually opposite directions by a power-communicating mechanism (P) which includes a trajectory-forming mechanism (H) such that the seal jaws (20) will each travel on a generally D-shaped trajectory with a linear section along the path (A) of the bag-making material (S). Cramming devices (50) are adjustably attached to the rotary arms (12) and press the tubularly shaped bag-making material (S) from both sides in forward-backward direction (X) such that the articles (W) can be more efficiently crammed with empty spaces among them effectively reduced.

A lateral sealing mechanism for use in a bag-making and packaging machine includes movable rotary shafts. The movable rotary shafts are driven by a lateral drive mechanism so that the distance between the shafts is controllable. Support mechanisms are mounted on and rotatable about the shafts. The support mechanisms support sealing elements for forming lateral heat seals on a tubular packaging material from which the bags are formed. The support mechanisms are such that the sealing elements are tiltable with respect to the tubular packaging material, and so that two sealing elements can be maintained in directly opposed engagement to one another across the packaging material as the seal is formed. The machine includes a squeezing mechanism that operates to force the packaged material downward within the tubular material and out of a sealing region before the seal is formed. The machine also includes a shutter mechanism to force the packaged material upward and to prevent the packaged material from entering the sealing region as the seal is formed.

The open end of a plastics bag or like container is sealed by inserting the open end into the mouth of a sealer which welds the plastics film by the application of heat and pressure. Upon detection of the presence of a bag in the mouth a control unit initiates a sealing cycle. The user has available a film selection switch, linked to the control unit, to enable different film materials to be sealed satisfactorily. The sealing pressure, the sealing temperature and the duration of the sealing action are parameters which affect the sealing. These are independently controllable and presettable to cater for different film materials. The choice of the switch setting causes the control unit to initiate a sealing cycle with appropriate values for each of these parameters.

The rotational shafts 80 move the cam followers 76 relatively about rotational centers of the rotational shafts 80. The coupling members 79 couple the rotational shafts 80 and the cam followers 76. The shaft support portions rotatably support the rotational shafts 80. The partial cams 88 have a shape that corresponds to a locus of movement of the pair of seal jaws 78 when the pair of seal jaws 78 holds the tubular packaging films. The partial cams 88 make the pair of seal jaws 78 press against each other with the partial cam followers 78 a therebetween. The partial cam followers 78 a are supported by the pair of seal jaws 78. The partial cam followers 78 a engage the corresponding partial cams 88 when the pair of seal jaws 78 holds the tubular packaging film therebetween.
