How much can k-means be improved by using better initialization and repeats?

Scientists study trajectory data to understand trends in movement patterns, such as human mobility for traffic analysis and urban planning. In this paper, we introduce a novel trajectory clustering technique whose central idea is to use vector fields to induce a notion of similarity between trajectories, letting the vector fields themselves define and represent each cluster. We present an efficient algorithm to find a locally optimal clustering of trajectories into vector fields, and demonstrate how vector-field k-means can find patterns missed by previous methods. We present experimental evidence of its effectiveness and efficiency using several datasets, including historical hurricane data, GPS tracks of people and vehicles, and anonymous cellular radio handoffs from a large service provider.

In a DNA microarray dataset, gene expression data often has a huge number of features(which are referred to as genes) versus a small size of samples. With the development of DNA microarray technology, the number of dimensions increases even faster than before, which could lead to the problem of the curse of dimensionality. To get good classification performance, it is necessary to preprocess the gene expression data. Support vector machine recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE) is a classical method for gene selection. However, SVM-RFE suffers from high computational complexity. To remedy it, this paper enhances SVM-RFE for gene selection by incorporating feature clustering, called feature clustering SVM-RFE (FCSVM-RFE). The proposed method first performs gene selection roughly and then ranks the selected genes. First, a clustering algorithm is used to cluster genes into gene groups, in each which genes have similar expression profile. Then, a representative gene is found to represent a gene group. By doing so, we can obtain a representative gene set. Then, SVM-RFE is applied to rank these representative genes. FCSVM-RFE can reduce the computational complexity and the redundancy among genes. Experiments on seven public gene expression datasets show that FCSVM-RFE can achieve a better classification performance and lower computational complexity when compared with the state-the-art-of methods, such as SVM-RFE.

Feature clustering based support vector machine recursive feature elimination for gene selection

Cluster analysis is one of the primary data analysis methods and k-means is one of the most well known popular clustering algorithms. The k-means algorithm is one of the frequently used clustering method in data mining, due to its performance in clustering massive data sets. The final clustering result of the k- means clustering algorithm greatly depends upon the correctness of the initial centroids, which are selected randomly. The original k-means algorithm converges to local minimum, not the global optimum. Many improvements were already proposed to improve the performance of the k-means, but most of these require additional inputs like threshold values for the number of data points in a set. In this paper a new method is proposed for finding the better initial centroids and to provide an efficient way of assigning the data points to suitable clusters with reduced time complexity. According to our experimental results, the proposed algorithm has the more accuracy with less computational time comparatively original k-means clustering algorithm.
