Solar energy is most popular amongst the renewable energy sources. The reason being, the solar panels are modular in nature, has long life with non-moving parts and the time for commissioning is less compared to other sources. Like other renewable energy sources it is intermittent in nature and the output power induced in the photovoltaic modules is influenced by the intensity of solar radiation and temperature of solar cells. It is necessary to track the maximum power point of the input source. In this paper, a maximum power point tracker(MPPT) using perturb and observe algorithm is proposed to improve energy conversion efficiency with boost converter. The system is consisting of solar module, boost converter and resistive load simulated using PSIM software.

Simulation of P & O Algorithm using Boost Converter

This research focused on finding DC/DC converters boost type with the best output through simulation methods by comparing the use of components from several boost converter topologies so that they can be used to maximize solar panel output. Several simulation scenarios are needed using PSpice A/D Lite software. Boost converter types that will be compared are Single Switch Cascaded Converter, Multilevel Boost Converter, Quadratic Boost Converter, Double Cascade Boost Converter and Phase Interleaved Boost Converter. The simulation scenario provided aims to see the converter output response to changes in load resistor parameters, switching frequency and input voltage. The load resistance value used is 1 KOhm, the greater the resistance value, the greater the output voltage value. The effective switching frequency is different in each converter. The converter type Single Switch Cascaded Converter has the highest voltage gain of 32.96 times with an output voltage of 988.8 V at the minimum switching frequency at 1KHz and with the use of the fewest number of components compared to other converters of 10 units. It can be said that the boost converter type Single Switch Cascaded Converter is the most optimal boost converter compared to 4 other boost converters.

Comparison of DC-DC Converters Boost Type in Optimizing the Use of Solar Panels

Photovoltaic (PV) system is a rapidly flourishing area for the implementation of renewable energy (RE) based power generation systems and their development is specifically owed to minimize the consumption of conventional fossil fuel thus minimizing immense emissions of harmful greenhouse gases. In order to harvest maximum power from PV arrays, MPPT techniques work in-cooperation with DC-DC converter. With the involvement of converter, two major issues rise: 1) convergence speed to detect the MPP as the sampling rate of PV system depends upon the converter system element parameters and 2) the stability of PV system under varying ambient conditions. Thus the designing of a DC-DC converter, gains a paramount importance. The research work in this paper revolves around the non-isolated boost converters. The averaging state-space model is utilized to derive the governing equations of the converter with respect to PV array and relations are provided to calculate the values of inductor, input capacitor and output capacitor. Several simulations are conducted in Matlab/Simulink and comparative analysis with the *(existing converter design) past-proposed converters have been presented. It has been proved that the performance of proposed DC-DC converter has superior performance.

Effects of input capacitor (cin) of boost converter for photovoltaic system

Renewable energy sources such as solar energy are acquiring more significance, due to shortage and environmental impacts of conventional fuels. The photovoltaic (PV) system for converting solar energy into electricity is in general costly and is a vital way of electricity generation only if it can produce the maximum possible output for all weather conditions. This paper presents the design and practical implementation of the real-time P & O algorithm for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control in a photovoltaic (PV) system. The PV system usually consists of a PV array that converts solar energy to electrical energy, a DC/DC converter that converters low dc voltages produced by the PV array to a high dc voltage (Buck boost converter), which is directly connected to load or battery. A DSP that controls the total system and implement the MPPT algorithm by controlling the current and voltage of the PV array. The MPPT algorithm is vital in increasing the efficiency of the system. A 100 W prototyping PV system was implemented with a buck boost dc-dc converter using a DSP controller to execute the proposed MPPT algorithm. An MPPT algorithm was tested for fast changing environmental conditions, and the test results are analysed .These are very useful to design low power residential application.
