A collimation lens system for converging the light from an LED into a light beam, includes a central lens aligned along the optical axis of the LED for converging inner light from the LED, the central lens including an aspheric collimation plano convex lens having a planar entrance surface and an aspheric exit surface; and a peripheral lens surrounding the central lens for converging outer light from the LED, the peripheral lens including a total internal reflection collimation lens having an entrance surface and an exit surface and including a high order aspheric total internal reflection surface for reflecting the outer light by total internal reflection. The central lens and the peripheral lens share a common focal point at which the LED may be positioned.

Collimation lens system for LED

A light source, includes an LED emitter and a meniscus lens having a hollow cavity in which the LED emitter is disposed. The meniscus lens is in exemplary embodiments hyperhemispheric, and it produces a high quality optical image of the LED emitter. The cavity of the lens is filled with air, such as terrestrial atmosphere, inert gas, or vacuum.

Led source with hollow collection lens

A light source module is provided comprising an emitter having at least one light emitting surface and an at least partially hollow integrating optic mounted over the emitting surface; where the index of refraction within the hollowed area is less then the index of the subsequent medium along the optical path. The integrating optic has a proximal end facing the emitting surface and a distal end facing away from the emitting surface. The distal end of the integrating optic is flat and has a rectangular aspect ratio which can differ from the aspect ratio of the emitter. One or more optical films and/or an optical component such as a collection lens can be adhered to the distal end of the integrating optic.

Integrating light source module

A projection subsystem includes a light engine that provides a collection lens, a collimator and at least one solid state light emitter. A projection lens assembly receives the image and provides a projection beam having a luminous flux level. The projection subsystem has a portability efficacy.

Optical projection subsystem

A light engine has a light source front surface that emits non-collimated light. A collection lens collects the non-collimated light and provides incompletely collimated light. A collimating lens receives the incompletely collimated light and provides a collimated image. A non-orthogonal polarizing filter receives the collimated image and passes a polarized portion of the collimated image as a direct component of the polarized light engine image. The non-orthogonal polarizing filter reflects a recycled image back to the front surface. The non-orthogonal shape of the polarizing filter is selected according to the pattern of light on the light source front surface.

Led illumination system with polarization recycling

A focusing unit includes a Fresnel lens combination, where the Fresnel lenses are oriented to reduce shadowing losses. Shadowing is a scattering of light from reflection at the facet walls that separate adjacent Fresnel zones on a given Fresnel lens. Two substantially adjacent Fresnel lenses make up the focusing unit, which can be used as a condenser that collects light from a source in a projection system. Both Fresnel lenses have non-faceted sides that face the light source. The first Fresnel lens collimates the light from the source. The second Fresnel lens receives the collimated beam, with a range of incident angles determined by the spatial extent of the source. Components such as reflective polarizers and anti-reflection coatings can be used between the Fresnel lenses and can be applied to the non-faceted side of the second Fresnel lens.
