An intelligent interface between symbolic and numeric analysis tools required for the development of an integrated CAD system

Artificial intelligence AI techniques are successfully used for various design and optimization tasks, and have previously been applied to design magic tricks. A magical effect is an event that the observer perceives as being outside the normal physical rules of the world. In this work, we revisit an AI framework that has been used to produce a two-dimensional interlocking piece jigsaw design with two simultaneous solutions, one showing 12 identical shapes, the other only ten, giving rise to the believable illusion of the shapes vanishing. To achieve this effect, the design framework enables the combination of both geometric optimization constraints and constraints derived from empirically determined psychophysical and cognitive investigations. We further discuss the human factors that affect an observer’s perception of a magic trick and how these observations can be used in a computational optimization process. We also provide a more detailed analysis of the algorithms used to generate the magical effects.

Magic in Pieces: An Analysis of Magic Trick Construction Using Artificial Intelligence as a Design Aid

We present a novel problem solving environment for automated process design, integrating cognitive agents, web repositories and distributed software components with an existing automated process design tool. The approach is portable and addresses two key aspects of design: problem formulation and innovation. We model problem formulation and implement the resulting strategy through a pair of cognitive agents. The agents are situated within a larger framework which provides access to a wealth of resources. The approach supports innovation in design by freeing the designer to focus on creative aspects.

Enhancing automated process design with cognitive agents, distributed software components and web repositories

A novel problem-solving environment for automated process design, which integrates cognitive agents, web repositories and distributed software components with an existing automated process design tool, is presented. It is shown how the approach offers the potential for significant improvements in two key aspects of design, namely, problem formulation and innovation. Note that by improving the quality of the solutions space, the approach directly supports optimization.

In spite of recent advancements in computer aided design and engineering (CAD/CAE), such as parametric geometry and automatic mesh generation, a large gap exists between computer based design model and analysis model. In this paper, a new product specific approach to integrate design and analysis integration is proposed. The primary objective of this approach is to capture designer's intent from the limited interaction with the designer in a language that is familiar to designer and to provide the feed back on the suitability of the design based on the finite element analysis (FEA) so that the design is automatically and iteratively modified. Hence, the proposed modeling paradigm provides capabilities of analysis to the designer and acts as a black box without requiring the designer to possess relevant knowledge of FEA. Priority has been given to the class of problems termed as routine analysis – the regularly used, established analysis model in the product design. A representative case study pertaining to Belleville spring is discussed in the context of the proposed methodology to demonstrate that it enables highly automated routine analysis through FEA for the model.

A Modeling Paradigm for Product Specific Design Analysis Integration

Conventional computer-aided design (CAD) packages have drastically reduced the workload of the human designer and shortened the product design cycle. However, the degree of effort and volume of information required to use these tools limit their use to the later stages of design. Intelligent computer-aided design (ICAD) systems have sought to provide a more complete design tool to assist the designer in all phases of design. ICAD systems incorporate conventional CAD elements as well as knowledge engineering constructs. The level of integration between different components of an ICAD system determines its usefulness. Most commercial intelligent CAD packages are tied to a specific set of CAD tools, restricting their application domains.
