Despite the ever expanding forms of digital entertainment and the emergence of consumer recording facilities, allowing viewers to time shift their TV viewing habits, there are still certain TV shows and events that create an audience desire to be part of a mass shared experience. In the past direct inter-audience interaction of such events has been restricted to either a shared location at the time of broadcast or later discussions amongst friends and colleagues often described as 'water cooler moments'. With the advent of online social networks that facilitate status updates these moments can be instantly shared in real-time using mobile phone creating a second screen for interaction with TV. In this paper we investigate the emerging role of mobile phones as the facilitator of second screen for TV. This is achieved through the analysis of tweets for a highly popular UK TV show the X Factor and comparing tweets from this show with other shows from a different format. The results highlight the rich source of information that can be extracted in real-time and how audiences are creating their own parallel narrative of the show through Twitter. This interaction has enormous potential for broadcasters and producers both in terms of reinvigorating live TV viewing and creating new forms of audience interaction.

Spraycan:a PPGIS for capturing imprecise notions of place

This paper focuses on the methods used in a project which set out to capture the movements and to consider the wellbeing of 30 teenagers on their journeys to and from school. A mobile phone linked to a GPS receiver was used to automatically log travel patterns whilst the respondents added ‘blog’ images and text about how they felt on the journey. Follow up interviews further explored the data. The paper shows that by using a range of methods the young people became involved in the project in different ways providing a rich picture of contingent and complex school journeys.

Talk, technologies and teenagers: understanding the school journey using a mixed-methods approach

This paper challenges the sustainable HCI community to move away from a focus on demand and instead address climate change as a supply problem. We identify a new route to impact, namely addressing the psychological barriers that interfere with political mobilization toward limiting the use of fossil fuels. Five barriers are explored as a means of re-focusing research objectives for the community.

Rethinking plan A for sustainable HCI

Mobile phones offer considerable challenges for game developers, and not least among them is the user interface, which is primarily optimized for number entry rather than for playing games. In fact, due to the limitations one of the most desirable criteria for mobile games has the design of games controlled by a one-button interface. However, this type of interface has only been seen as applicable for casual games, where mastering the interface is de-emphasized. As a number of mobile phones are starting to appear with 3-D accelerometers, game developers have the opportunity to investigate new interface mechanisms. In this article we illustrate how accelerometers provide the possibility of a no-button mobile game. While 3-D accelerometers offer a range of possible interface mechanisms, the one that requires minimal signal processing and no external references is motion, and in particular, tilt, and as such is eminently suitable for mobile phones. In this article we explore a tilt interface for a 3-D graphics first-person driving game titled Tunnel Run, and compare the user experience playing the same game with a traditional phone joypad interface and with a tilt interface in two different modes. The results show that the tilt interface was experienced as fun, and certainly seemed more attractive to players, who said they would not have played this type of game otherwise.
