A survey of information security incident handling in the cloud

Cloud computing is a rapidly evolving information technology (IT) phenomenon. Rather than procure, deploy and manage a physical IT infrastructure to host their software applications, organizations are increasingly deploying their infrastructure into remote, virtualized environments, often hosted and managed by third parties. This development has significant implications for digital forensic investigators, equipment vendors, law enforcement, as well as corporate compliance and audit departments (among others). Much of digital forensic practice assumes careful control and management of IT assets (particularly data storage) during the conduct of an investigation. This paper summarises the key aspects of cloud computing and analyses how established digital forensic procedures will be invalidated in this new environment. Several new research challenges addressing this changing context are also identified and discussed.

Designs in human-computer interaction (HCI) aim to create interactive products that are easy and enjoyable to use. However, owing to the multidisciplinary nature of HCI and the different value systems of interface users from various backgrounds and experiences, it is highly challenging for designers to create applications which are usable and affordable to such a heterogeneous set of users. Nowadays, more and more people are heard complaining about the bad interaction design of mobile devices. Is this problem caused by the bad design of products or by the users' ignorance of the logics of human- machine interaction design? This paper aims to explore the human-computer interaction challenges in designing applications in both hardware and software for mobile devices. It also makes an attempt to investigate the principles for designing mobile interfaces that result in greater user acceptance and figure out possible solutions to the problems with interaction designs for mobile devices.

An analysis of digital forensic examinations: Mobile devices versus hard disk drives utilising ACPO & NIST guidelines

All organisations, whether in the public or private sector, use computers for the storage and processing of information relating to their business or services, their employees and their customers. A large proportion of families and individuals in their homes now also use personal computers and, both intentionally and inadvertently, often store on those computers personal information. It is clear that most organisations and individuals continue to be unaware of the information that may be stored on the hard disks that the computers contain, and have not considered what may happen to the information after the disposal of the equipment. In 2005, joint research was carried out by the University of Glamorgan in Wales and Edith Cowan University in Australia to determine whether second hand computer disks that were purchased from a number of sources still contained any information or whether the information had been effectively erased. The research revealed that, for the majority of the disks that were examined, the information had not been effectively removed and as a result, both organisations and individuals were potentially exposed to a range of potential crimes.  It is worthy of note that in the disposal of this equipment, the organisations involved had failed to meet their statutory, regulatory and legal obligations. This paper describes a second research project that was carried out in 2006 which repeated the research carried out the previous year and also extended the scope of the research to include additional countries.  The methodology used was the same as that in the previous year and the disks that were used for the research were again supplied blind by a third party. The research involved the forensic imaging of the disks which was followed by an analysis of the disks to determine what information remained and whether it could be easily recovered using publicly available tools and techniques.

Digital evidence is proving increasingly pivotal in criminal investigations whether it is an arrest for a minor offence or a more serious activity. As people rely on mobile phones and their many functions, the digital trail of evidence continues to grow. The forensic examination of mobile phones is a relatively new discipline and research activity into the forensic analysis of these types of phones, and the information they may contain, is limited when compared to the exponential increase in ownership of these types of phones. The amount of ubiquitous information stored on mobile phones will continue to grow as their processing power and storage capacity increases and the phones incorporate more functionality and applications. Guidelines, publications and research into the more traditional digital forensic examination of computer hard disks are well documented, whereas for mobile phones, the publications and research are not that established. The aim of this paper is to examine the current methods involved in the forensic examination of mobile phones and to identify those areas of mobile phone examination where the current United Kingdom ACPO guidelines and the United States of America NIST guidelines are unclear or insubstantial.

An Analysis of the Digital Forensic Examination of Mobile Phones

ID theft, especially in its online form, is currently one of the most prevalent types of computer crime. The limited end-user awareness as well as the retention and business processing of large amounts of personal data in a manner that does not meet security and regulatory requirements provide plenty of opportunities to fraudsters. A number of organisations have produced guidelines of good practice targeted to individuals and organisations; however the matter is still on the rise. In this paper, we review computer-based techniques employed by fraudsters in order to steal IDs and refer to published guidelines and the documented good practice against those. We discuss the issues related to the investigation of such incidents and provide the grounds for the development of a framework to assist in their forensic examination.
