The objective of this study was to evaluate the sexual function of survivors of cervical cancer (CC) in comparison to the control group of women without a history of cancer. This was an observational, analytical, case–control study. In the cancer group, women subjected to CC treatment of at least 3 months in the past were included (n = 37). For each survivor, one random selection from a base population control group was made (n = 37) of a woman without a history of cancer and with similar socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. The sexual function was evaluated through the female sex function index (FSFI) instrument. Data collection occurred through the application of questions in a face-to-face interview. In the cancer group, 64.9 % related vaginal stenosis or shortening; 59.5 % were not sexually active and of those which had sexual relations, 80 % showed dysfunction. The total FSFI score varied between 9.60 and 35.10 in the cancer group and 23.90 and 36.00 in the control group. The means of the cancer group were statistically inferior (P < 0.05) to the control group in all the FSFI domains and in the total score. The mean total score was 21.72 in the cancer group, classified as sexual dysfunction when considering a score of 26 as the cutoff point. CC treatment was found to have a negative impact on the sexual function of women. Further, sexual function should be monitored routinely by interdisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive care with the objective of an improved quality of life post-cancer.

Sexual function of women surviving cervical cancer.

Considering the high death rate of women for breast, uterus and ovary cancers, and research findings indicating links between stress, coping and oncologic diseases, this study investigated, in 30 women with and 30 women without cancer, the occurrence of stress in their previous history as well as the importance attached to the it, and their evaluation of its resilience in the health care, social/work and family areas. The results indicated links between the ways of evaluating and facing stressful situations and the illness condition, suggesting that more optimistic and direct patterns of dealing with stress can reduce its impact on human psychological/physiological balance. Given the increasing exposure of women to stress, psychological and educational programs for reducing the impact of stress on the female population are indicated.

Introduction:The nursing diagnosis subsidizes the basis for prescription of nursing interventions. In this study, focus 
is on the altered body dysfunction by decreasing light vaginal radiotherapy to treat cervical cancer. Objective: To 
describe and discuss the occurrence of nursing diagnosis regarding sexual dysfunction related to radiotherapy in the 
female pelvis for cervical cancer treatment in patients treated at the Brazilian National Cancer Institute - Jose Alencar 
Gomes da Silva (INCA). Method:A descriptive observational study, longitudinal type, comprising 142 women. Data 
collection took place in the gynecology outpatient clinic at the II Cancer Hospital /INCA, through a semi-structured 
questionnaire. Survival curves were obtained by using the Kaplan-Meyer and were calculated in R application. Results: 
Decreased libido occurred in 66% and sexual pleasure in 60%; bleeding during intercourse was reported by 49% of 
women, and dispaurenia in 53%. Increased libido and pleasure occurred in 14% of the sample. Free survival of vaginal 
stenosis for 60 months was 40%. The median time of occurrence of vaginal stenosis was 42.9 months. Conclusion: 
The use of nursing diagnosis as a tool to describe the effect of late radiotherapy of sexual dysfunction effectively 
contemplates the defining characteristics and promotes the formation of appropriate factors related to the situation 
in question. In this study the most common characteristics were: perceived deficit of sexual desire, inability to achieve 
desired sexual satisfaction, real limitation imposed by therapy and verbalization of the problem.

Disfunção sexual relacionada à radioterapia na pelve feminina: diagnóstico de enfermagem

PURPOSE: to identify sexual dysfunctions in patients with cancer of the uterine cervix submitted to exclusive radiotherapy, using the high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy technique. METHODS: a descriptive transversal study from January to June of 2004. The study involved 71 selected patients who had been followed in the pelvis outpatient clinic from the Hospital do Câncer de Pernambuco and selected according to the established profile. Data were collected from a structured questionnaire, complemented by a gynecological exam aimed at investigating complaints of sexual dysfunction after the radiotherapy. Epi-Info 6.04 was the statistical program used to process and analyze the data. Descriptive analysis was done through the mean, median and range. Bivariate analysis was done through the Marginal Homogeneity and McNamara's tests, considering 5% as the level of significance. RESULTS: among the gynecological complications identified, we can highlight fibrosis, stenosis and vaginal atrophy (98.6%, 76.1% and 71.8%, respectively). The sexual dysfunctions identified were: frigidity, lack of lubrication, excitation and orgasm in 76.1% of the cases, lack of sex drive in 40.8% and vaginism in 5.6% of the cases. CONCLUSIONS: sexual dysfunctions are frequent in patients with cancer of the advanced uterine cervix treated with exclusive radiotherapy using the protocol of HDR. Specific attention should be given to the sexual anamnesis and the gynecological exam during these patients' attendance.
