Barriers of value management implementation for building projects in Egyptian construction industry

The value management (VM) approach often faces many barriers when applied in the Vietnamese construction industry, as well as in many other developing countries. Most of the related past works identify an insufficient number of factors that hinder the application of VM. This study identified 18 factors hindering the application of VM in the construction industry. To gather views from industrial practitioners with many years of experience in construction projects, this study administered questionnaire surveys. The findings revealed that the four greatest obstacles to the application of VM were the lack of VM experts, the lack of knowledge about VM, the lack of local VM guidelines, as well as technical norms and standards, and the lack of investments, support policies and human resources to conduct VM in construction companies. Additionally, the factor analysis method was applied to investigate the correlation effects of the hindrance factors, which resulted in four core components representing the hindrance factors, namely, lack of qualified personnel to implement VM, inherent difficulties with VM workshops, lack of awareness of VM, and lack of VM application documents. The study contributes to the body of knowledge relating to the application of VM in the construction industry. The findings can be generalised to many developing countries, as they face similar problems in terms of promoting the application of VM in the construction industry.

Barriers to Applying Value Management in the Vietnamese Construction Industry

More attention should be paid to project managers’ (PMs) job satisfaction as they play an important role in ensuring projects are completed successfully. The purpose of this paper is to identify human resource management (HRM) policies and practices that lead to higher PMs’ job satisfaction.,A questionnaire survey was conducted on PMs who are working in construction firms and project management consultancy firms. Data were collected via random, convenience and snowball sampling. The data collected were analysed using partial least square-structural equation modelling, independent samples t-test and Pearson’s correlation.,The findings show that PMs who are satisfied with their firms’ HRM practices and job rewards also have higher job satisfaction. Several HRM strategies that give rise to higher job satisfaction are identified, e.g. a system to recognise and develop talent, and taking active steps to identify and develop backups in case of emergency. Unfortunately, some practices are not implemented to a significant extent, and these include: systematically recruiting and retaining talented PMs, encouraging PMs to plan for their careers, offering performance and development coaching, and appraising employees.,The limitations include the low response rate and the relatively small sample size of 81. The profile of respondents is largely from construction companies with more than 150 staff, and, therefore, the findings are more applicable to medium- to large-sized construction firms.,The study identified many HRM practices and policies that are significantly associated with PMs’ job satisfaction, yet many of these are not implemented to a significant extent by the employers. The practical implication is that employers of PMs should systematically implement these in order that their PMs have higher job satisfaction which is important for a project’s success.,The originality of this research is that the HRM practices and policies that are associated with job satisfaction of PMs are uncovered. Its value is in showing that PMs derive greater job satisfaction when HRM policies encompass talent development, career coaching and a personalised management style. Among these important practices, those that have been neglected were also identified. The study offers recommendations on the HRM practices that firms should be put in place for their PMs to experience higher job satisfaction.

Human resource management practices to improve project managers’ job satisfaction

since the construction activities involve most complex processes and the most intensive administrative atmosphere as well, the accident events come raised in different situations and due to various causations. Most of the construction accidents originate from human errors and operation sources such as equipments and facilities in work processes. Most accidents lead to the loss of life, injuries and loss of properties. The other possible results due to the errors, unsafe acts, and unsafe conditions can be categorized in Near miss events (no result of injuries), and incidents (likelihood of injuries or loss of property). The role of a tool by which the causations and the processes can be highlighted is vital to save the projects not to be trapped. In order to recognize the reasons or the factors contributing to accidents, several theories have been developed by researchers. Domino theory as a structural map has been one of the most understandable and widely acceptable theories among the accident theories. The authorities employ it to control the factors causing undesirable events and to prevent the errors before being made. The aims of this paper are firstly, to describe the shortcomings of construction processes contributing hazardous situations. secondly, highlighting, the ways to apply Domino theory, and thirdly, to define how to establish a remedy model to prevent accidents in construction projects based on domino theory in simple statements.

Application of Domino Theory to Justify and Prevent Accident Occurance in Construction Sites

Nowadays, the role of Human Resource (HR) managers in construction projects is very vital. Although construction is one of the most labour-intensive industries, Human Resource Management (HRM) issues are given inadequate attention in this industry. Hiring competent Hr professionals in construction firms can promote the quantity and quality of products, as well as they increase the possibility of successful achievement in strategic goals. To assess the importance of HR managers’ roles in construction industries, this study has employed Delphi method based on experts' opinions to identify essential competencies. In this study, 12 essential competencies for HR managers of construction companies have been identified, which contribute to a better performance of companies' missions and achievements in strategic goals.

Essential Competencies for the Human Resource Managers and Professionals in Construction Industries

Moving forward in21 st century uncertainty of the success and survival of organizations has been increased dramatically. Nowadays construction industry has been faced with several crucial problems namely rapid and unpredictable changes, financial problems, environmental conditions, special requirements, customers’ different attitudes as well as profitability of the project. Value engineering has been used in several governments and in the design, construction, and manufacturing of their industries in order to optimize projects, business, manufacturing processes, and also product developments. During the current study, the researchers attempted to investigate the value engineering in construction industry of Iran due to the importance of the implementation of value engineering principles. To this aim, a survey method research has been used in order to collect the required data, by means of a questionnaire. 56 people in charge with construction industry have been participated in the current study. In order to validate the questionnaire, a pilot study has been done among a subsample of 15 participants. By means of statistical procedure the reliability and also validity of the questionnaire has been proved. All of the gathered data have been analyzed deceptively by version 20 of the SPSS software. During the current study researchers had two main objectives namely; identifying factors which hinder value engineering implementation in the construction industry of Iran and identifying the needs of value engineering utilization in the mentioned context. Regarding the results of the current study and based on the mean index, for the first objective of the study five items considered as the main factors namely; Outdated standards and specifications, Habitual thinking and negative attitude, Lack of local guidelines and information, Lack of knowledge and practices and Change in owners’ requirements. Besides, based on the results of second objective, three items considered as the essential needs for value engineering utilization in Iran, namely; The necessity of making clients more demanding and knowledgeable of the value engineering, The importance of adding value engineering Change Proposals (VECP) clause in the Contract Document, and essentiality of updating standards and criteria in construction industry in the Iran. Hopefully the results of the current study seems to be useful for a number of people who can benefit from the results such as construction project managers, contractors and the people in charge with construction projects of Iran.

Evaluating Effective Factors on Value Engineering Implementation in the Context of Iran

• Critical causes of RMAA-related accidents are identified. • Novel hybrid fuzzy-based algorithms are employed for result accuracy enhancement. • Considerable inherent interrelationships exist among RMAA-related causal factors. • “Limited financial/safety resources of SMEs” is the most influential causal factor. • The identified causes are prioritized using IVIF-DEMATEL-ANP method. Despite the recent improvements made to the area of occupational health and safety (OHS) within the construction sector, the Repair, Maintenance, Minor alteration, and Addition (RMAA) works have been given scant attention. In this study, given the significance of the injuries reported in the RMAA sector, a meticulous investigation is conducted into the causal factors contributing to the related accidents by capturing their causal interrelationships together with their importance levels. To this end, first, a comprehensive list of factors contributing to RMAA accidents was obtained through an extensive literature review and experts’ interviews. Then, through the lenses of qualified relevant experts in Hong Kong, the proposed interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy (IVIF) DEMATEL and IVIF analytic network process were employed to respectively uncover the cause-and-effect relationships among these factors and prioritize them. The findings show that “the lack of assessment and praising of workers’ OHS understanding and performance,” “the high turnover rate of workers resulting in difficulties in providing safety training and education,” and “lack of safety training for workers” are the most critical causes to be given full attention by construction safety managers. The methodological approach proposed in this study brings about two theoretical contributions: unraveling interrelationships existing among the causal factors, and prioritization of them considering their interrelationships. The findings reported in this study also aid decision-makers in improving the critical causal factors in a way to enhance the OHS of RMAA sector. 

A comprehensive analysis of the causal factors in repair, maintenance, alteration, and addition works: A novel hybrid fuzzy-based approach

During the recent years different people in charge have been considered about different costs of the plants in the construction industry. Usually it seems to be a big challenge for different people in charge and mainly contractors to decrease the costs of the projects through the optimum use of construction plants in order to increase the quality of the project and decrease time and cost. During the current study, researchers have been investigated about the construction plant use in the construction sites and also its effect on the quality and also time of the project. Forty three people in charge with the construction projects have been participated in the current survey. After analyzing the required data through SPSS software and based on the mean index of the scores five items have been identified as the most important issues in the construction management regarding the use if plants namely: The effect of spare parts availability to decrease downtime, the effect of employing expert mechanics to increase the repair quality, impact of gasoline and petrol availability to decrease wasting the time, impact of periodic control and serviceability of plants and equipment to increase productivity, impact of training persons who are involved plants and equipment to increase productivity. It goes without saying that extracted factors have significant role in the construction projects and different contractors should consider them in their projects.
