Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. En este trabajo preliminar se reportan las edades, microfacies, microfosiles y la situacion estructural delas calizas de plataforma que afloran en el area del rio Tempisque (Guanacaste). Existen dos plataformas carbonata-das: el Viejo, de edad Campaniano Superior-Maastrichtiano, que esta representada por facies de talud en los cerrosBallena y Cebollin y, la plataforma de Barra Honda, de edad Paleoceno Superior-Eoceno Inferior, que se extiende des-de los afloramientos tipicos, en el sur del area estudiada (cerros Barra Honda), hasta la region de Palo Verde al norte.En el cerro Cebollin, los basaltos del Complejo de Nicoya s.str estan sobreyacidos disconformemente por depositosturbiditicos y de mass. Clastos de caliza pelagica con foraminiferos planctonicos como globotruncanas (Globotrun-canita elevata), macroforaminiferos (Sulcoperculina globosa, Sulcoperculina vermunti, Pseudorbitoides rutteni,Asterorbis, Nummuloculina, Proporocyclina) y abundantes fragmentos de rudistides atestiguan una edad del Campa-niano Superior al Maastrichtiano para esta secuencia. Contenidos variables de clastos de basalto y de serpentinita documentan la erosion de un basamento ultramafico, como la unidad Ultramafica de Santa Elena. Interpretamos la secuencia de los cerros Ballena y Cebollin como depositos de talud que fueron alimentados desde la plataforma somerade la Formacion El Viejo, que aflora, tanto al norte de la peninsula de Nicoya, como de la de Santa Elena.En los cerros Barra Honda, Quebrada Honda y otros afloramientos clasicos de la Formacion Barra Honda, observa-mos una variedad de microfacies que documentan paleoambientes de plataforma restringida hasta de plataforma abier-ta. Todas las facies se caracterizan por la presencia de algas rojas (coralinaceas) y de Ethelia alba, una alga de la fa-milia Squariamaceae, caracteristica del Paleoceno en las plataformas del Medio Oriente, que se reporta por primeravez en America Central. Ethelia alba aparentemente crecio en las zonas de plataforma abierta y fue transportada enfragmentos hacia las zonas restringidas. Las facies micriticas contienen foraminiferos Rotalides, entre los cuales sedestaca Thalmannita madrugaensis, que se conoce hasta ahora unicamente en el Paleoceno de Cuba, ademas formasde miliolidos y Alveolinides.En la zona de Palo Verde (Fig. 5) las facies tipicas de Barra Honda pasan a facies de alta energia, caracterizadas porla presencia de macroforaminiferos del Paleoceno Superior-Eoceno Inferior Ranikothalia catenula, Neodiscocyclinabarkeri asociados a Ethelia alba .En el cerro Espiritu Santo se observa la transgresion de la plataforma de Barra Honda sobre lutitas siliceas alteradasy cubiertas por un posible paleosuelo, estas lutitas descansan sobre basaltos. Las primeras capas de plataforma contie-nen cantos rodados y perforados tipicos de la zona costera.En el extremo sur de los afloramientos de Barra Honda, cerca de Pochote observamos una secuencia que documenta el re-trabajo de clastos del Cretacico terminal en un ambiente de mar abierto, estan caracterizados por abundantes foraminife-ros planctonicos del Paleoceno Superior (Morozovella velascoensis) y Pentacrinites sp. (crinoideo de plataforma abierta).La secuencia pasa gradualmente a facies tipicas de Barra Honda hacia el techo. Calizas de plataforma somera datados delEoceno Inferior - Medio afloran como pequenos monticulos en la region de la Laguna Jicote, en el noroeste de la zona estudiada. Se caracterizan por una microfacies rica en algas rojas (Coralinaceas) y macroforaminiferos (Discocyclina, Eoco-nuloides wellsi, Amphistegina). Por ahora no podemos interpretar el origen de estos afloramientos.La plataforma Barra Honda sobreyace discordantemente a las formaciones deformadas del Cretacico Superior-Paleo-ceno, tanto al oeste del rio Tempisque, como en la zona de Palo Verde. Al este del rio Tempisque, en la zona del cerroNaranjo, el contacto basal de Barra Honda se caracteriza por la deformacion semiplastica intensa de las formacionesdetriticas subyacentes, las cuales pueden ser tan jovenes como el Eoceno Medio. El emplazamiento de Barra Hondasobre estas formaciones puede ser atribuido a una compactacion de las formaciones detriticas y un asentamiento de lascalizas, aunque tambien puede ser un resultado de una situacion transcompresiva, a lo largo de las fallas longitudina-les que han sido senaladas a lo largo del Tempisque.

Compositional diversity in peridotites as result of a multi-process history: The Pacific-derived Santa Elena ophiolite, northwest Costa Rica

The Sandino Forearc Basin of western Nicaragua and northwestern Costa Rica (Central America) provides a Campanian to Pliocene sedimentary record. The study of the onshore part of the basin in northwestern Costa Rica reveals for
 the first time the occurrence of upper Paleogene shallow-marine siliciclastic and carbonate sequences. These sequences have remained undescribed so far and are grouped herein into two new lithostratigraphic units—the upper Eocene Junquillal Formation (Fm.) and the upper Oligocene Juanilla Fm. The upper Eocene Junquillal Fm. is characterized by storm-related, arenitic to conglomeratic deposits comprised in metric, massive amalgamated beds. The shallow shelfal environment of deposition is attested by the presence of hummocky and swaley cross-stratifications. The lithologies of the Junquillal Fm. were previously considered to be part of the underlying, deep-water turbiditic deposits of the Eocene Descartes Fm. The deposition of the Junquillal Fm. is indicative of tectonic uplift that forced regression, which affected the southeastern part of the Sandino Forearc Basin during the late Eocene. The upper Oligocene Juanilla Fm. unconformably overlies the Junquillal Fm. and occurs as a 25-m-thick, 700-m-wide outcrop on Isla Juanilla. It is composed essentially of nodular, coral framestones exhibiting massive, closely packed corals in growth position that are associated with coralline red algae and Larger Benthic Foraminifera (LBF). A late Oligocene age of the reef is attested by LBF assemblages occurring in two different facies. The Juanilla Fm. coral reef is a unique exposure, characterized by extensive constructed coral framework, and which has no equivalent in the Oligocene geological record of Central America. The reef grew on a short-lived, siliciclastic-poor tectonic high, which developed in relation to a lower Oligocene, basin-scale folding event in the Sandino Forearc Basin.
