This review summarizes the rich structural variety of copper and silver chalcogenide clusters with protecting ligand shells of phosphane and/or organic ligands that were generated starting out from silylated chalcogenide sources. This route turned out to be fairly selective and thus allows for the isolation of uniform, polynuclear to nanosized cluster molecules that can consist of only a few or up to hundreds of metal atoms, being bridged by the chalcogen atoms. However, all of these clusters are only kinetically stable with respect to the formation of the binary coinage metal chalcogen phases, but do not collapse into the solid M2E materials owing to the protection by bulky ligands on the surface. Upon a more detailed analysis of the development of the structural properties with the cluster size, one recognizes differences for the particular M/E combinations: whereas copper chalcogenide and silver selenide clusters show a clear tendency to approach structural patterns of the Cu2E bulk, most obvious for the Cu/Se combination, this is not visible for silver sulfide clusters, even not at the largest species with 490 silver and 302 sulfur atoms. Besides the discussion on the structures of title compounds, the review presents insight into the bonding properties, reactivity, thermal and photophysical properties. The latter can be interpreted in terms of the quantum confinement effect, thus demonstrating the clusters to be understood as intermediates between mononuclear complexes and binary bulk phases.

A Highly Soluble Luminescent Decanuclear Gold(I) Complex with a Propeller‐Shaped Structure

Es ist schon sehr lange bekannt, das sich manche Ubergangsmetallsulfide in wasrigem Ammoniumpolysulfid losen. Obwohl anzunehmen war, das sich dabei Metallpolysulfide bilden, hat man sich diesem Verbindungstyp erst in den letzten Jahren intensiver zugewandt. Dabei konnte eine Fulle neuer Komplexe mit Polysulfido-Chelatliganden S (n=2,3,4…) isoliert und charakterisiert werden. Die Komplexe interessieren bezuglich ihrer Struktur und Reaktivitat, aber auch im Hinblick auf mogliche Anwendungen; mit ihnen konnen Schwefelringe definierter Grose gezielt hergestellt werden, und es deutet sich an, das sie auch in der Katalyse Verwendung finden konnten.

Übergangsmetallpolysulfide, Koordinationsverbindungen mit rein anorganischen Chelatliganden

Unter den Komplexen der Ubergangsmetalle mit weichen Liganden spielen die Thiolate eine wichtige und aktuelle Rolle. Durch die vielfaltigen elektronischen und sterischen Moglichkeiten einzahniger Liganden RS⊖ und zweizahniger Chelatliganden ⊖SRS⊖ stabilisieren Thiolate ein weites Spektrum einkerniger, oligomerer und polymerer Komplexe mit neuen und bemerkenswerten Strukturen und Eigenschaften. Besondere Impulse hat der Entwicklung die Synthese polynuclearer kafigartiger homo- und heteroleptischer Metall-Schwefel-Geruste gegeben, die in vielen Fallen als molekulare Ausschnitte aus Sulfid-Festkorperstrukturen anzusehen sind. Grose Bedeutung haben Thiolate und Sulfidothiolate von Mo sowie der spaten offen- und geschlossenschaligen 3d-Metalle (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) und einiger ihrer Homologen (Au, Cd, Hg) als Modellkomplexe fur biologisch wichtige Metallzentren mit Schwefelkoordination. Sie haben wesentlich zum Verstandnis von Struktur, Bindung und Funktion der Reaktionszentren etwa in Ferredoxinen, Rubredoxinen, Nitrogenasen, blauen Kupferproteinen, Metallothioneinen sowie antiarthritischen Wirkstoffen beigetragen.
