Hellenistic poets of the third and second centuries BC were concerned with the need both to mark their continuity with the classical past and to demonstrate their independence from it. In this revised and expanded translation of Muse e modelli: la poesia ellenistica da Alessandro Magno ad Augusto, Greek poetry of the third and second centuries BC and its reception and influence at Rome are explored allowing both sides of this literary practice to be appreciated. Genres as diverse as epic and epigram are considered from a historical perspective, in the full range of their deep-level structures, providing a different perspective on the poetry and its influence at Rome. Some of the most famous poetry of the age such as Callimachus' Aitia and Apollonius' Argonautica is examined. In addition, full attention is paid to the poetry of encomium, in particular the newly published epigrams of Posidippus, and Hellenistic poetics, notably Philodemus.

Statius' Silvae, written late in the reign of Domitian (AD 81–96), are a new kind of poetry that confronts the challenge of imperial majesty or private wealth by new poetic strategies and forms. As poems of praise, they delight in poetic excess whether they honour the emperor or the poet's friends. Yet extravagant speech is also capacious speech. It functions as a strategy for conveying the wealth and grandeur of villas, statues and precious works of art as well as the complex emotions aroused by the material and political culture of empire. The Silvae are the product of a divided, self-fashioning voice. Statius was born in Naples of non-aristocratic parents. His position as outsider to the culture he celebrates gives him a unique perspective on it. The Silvae are poems of anxiety as well as praise, expressive of the tensions within the later period of Domitian's reign.

While people of previous ages relied on public performance as their chief means of experiencing poetry, the Hellenistic age developed what one may term a culture of reading. This was the first era in which poets consciously shaped their works with an eye toward publication and reception not just on the civic stage, but in several media - in performance, on inscribed monuments, in scrolls. The essays in Peter Bing's collection explore how poetry accommodated various audiences, and how these in turn experienced the text in diverse ways. Over the years, Bing's essays have focused on certain Hellenistic authors and genres - particularly on Callimachus, Posidippus, and on Epigram. His themes, too, have been broadly consistent. Thus, although the essays in "The Marble and the Scroll" span some twenty years, they offer a coherent vision of Hellenistic poetics as a whole. This book contains seminal essays from one of the most prominent scholars of Hellenistic poetry.

The Scroll and the Marble: Studies in Reading and Reception in Hellenistic Poetry

In one of the «Marvelous Things Heard» by pseudo-Aristotle (mirab. auscult 131) we learn of the following very dramatic incident: the Athenians are in the process.of building the shrine of Demeter at Eleusis when, all at once, they make an exciting and mysterious discovery. Something has been brought to light, closed in among the rocks. It is a stele — but a most unusual one, made of bronze. This immediately suggests an artifact of great antiquity, perhaps from the Heroic Age. The stele, moreover, is inscribed with an epigram, in the original sense of the word, that is with a metrical inscription. Its text reads s follows: Δηιόττη$ τόδε σήμα, «This is the tomb of Deiope». The question arises s to the identity of this Deiope. Some argue that it is most likely the wife of the legendary singer Musaios; others, however, claim that it must be the mother of Triptolemos. This thrilling tale offers us a clear Illustration of how epigrams were originally tied to a particular location. That is to say: inscriptions generally refer to specific objects or monuments in a given place, where people set them up at a given historical moment, and for a certain purpose. Further, since such inscriptions are usually public, we may assume that they belong to the conceptual framework of their given Community, share its assumptions and traditions, and may be readily understood by its members. The stele of Deiope, by contrast — inasmuch s it is buried amid the rocks — has apparently been dislodged from its intended place. More importantly, people evidently no longer know who Deiope is. This prompts them to speculate: assuming that the tomb was not originally here, but somewhere eise (they rnight say to themselves), it was still probably linked with Eleusis; and since its bronze material suggests great age, Deiope probably belongs to the mythical prehistory of the site.
