This book describes and explains the fundamental physical processes involved in bubble dynamics and the phenomenon of cavitation. It is intended as a combination of a reference book for those scientists and engineers who work with cavitation or bubble dynamics and as a monograph for advanced students interested in some of the basic problems associated with this category of multiphase flows. A basic knowledge of fluid flow and heat transfer is assumed but otherwise the analytical methods presented are developed from basic principles.

The book begins with a chapter on nucleation and describes both the theory and observations of nucleation in flowing and non-flowing systems. The following three chapters provide a systematic treatment of the dynamics of the growth, collapse or oscillation of individual bubbles in otherwise quiescent liquids. Chapter 4 summarizes the state of knowledge of the motion of bubbles in liquids. Chapter 5 describes some of the phenomena which occur in homogeneous bubbly flows with particular emphasis on cloud cavitation and this is followed by a chapter summarizing some of the experiemntal observations of cavitating flows. The last chapter provides a review of the free streamline methods used to treat separated cavity flows with large attached cavities.

Cavitation and Bubble Dynamics

Summary. Expressions now exist from which may be calculated the propagation constants of elastic waves travelling through material containing a distribution of cracks. The cracks are randomly distributed in position and may be randomly orientated. The wavelengths involved are assumed to be large compared with the size of the cracks and with their separation distances so that the formulae, based on the mean taken over a statistical ensemble, may reasonably be used to predict the properties of a single sample. The results are valid only for small concentrations of cracks. Explicit expressions, correct to lowest order in the ratio of the crack size to a wavelength, are derived here for the overall elastic parameters and the overall wave speeds and attenuation of elastic waves in cracked materials where the mean crack is circular, and the cracks are either aligned or randomly orientated. The cracks may be empty or filled with solid or fluid material. These results are achieved on the basis of simply the static solution for an ellipsoidal inclusion under stress. The extension to different distributions of orientation or to mixtures of different types of crack is quite straightforward.

Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on variational and related methods for the overall properties of composites. A wide range of phenomena that are observable macroscopically are governed by partial differential equations that are linear and self-adjoint. This chapter is concerned with such phenomena for materials, such as fiber-reinforced composites or polycrystals, whose properties vary in a complicated fashion from point to point over a small, “microscopic” length scale, while they appear “on average” (that is, relative to the larger, macroscopic scale) to be uniform. This chapter treats the elastic behavior of composites, and emphasizes that a number of other properties (conductivity, viscosity of a suspension, etc.) are described by the same equations. Extensions to viscoelastic and thermoelastic behavior are presented, for both of which the variational characterization given is believed to be new. Problems, such as the resistance to flow of viscous fluid through a fixed bed of particles are mentioned, and a model problem that involves diffusion is presented in some detail. This displays the same difficulty in relation to divergence of an integral and is one problem of this type that has so far been approached variationally. Methods related to the Hashin–Shtrikman variational principle are also described in the chapter.

Variational and Related Methods for the Overall Properties of Composites

One major cause of elastic wave attenuation in heterogeneous porous media is wave-induced flow of the pore fluid between heterogeneities of various scales. It is believed that for frequencies below 1 kHz, the most important cause is the wave-induced flow between mesoscopic inhomogeneities, which are large compared with the typical individual pore size but small compared to the wavelength. Various laboratory experiments in some natural porous materials provide evidence for the presence of centimeter-scale mesoscopic heterogeneities. Laboratory and field measurements of seismic attenuation in fluid-saturated rocks provide indications of the role of the wave-induced flow. Signatures of wave-induced flow include the frequency and saturation dependence of P-wave attenuation and its associated velocity dispersion, frequency-dependent shear-wave splitting, and attenuation anisotropy. During the last four decades, numerous models for attenuation and velocity dispersion from wave-induced flow have been developed with varying degrees of rigor and complexity. These models can be categorized roughly into three groups according to their underlying theoretical framework. The first group of models is based on Biot’s theory of poroelasticity. The second group is based on elastodynamic theory where local fluid flow is incorporated through an additional hydrodynamic equation. Another group of models is derived using the theory of viscoelasticity. Though all models predict attenuation and velocity dispersion typical for a relaxation process, there exist differences that can be related to the type of disorder periodic, random, space dimension and to the way the local flow is incorporated. The differences manifest themselves in different asymptotic scaling laws for attenuation and in different expressions for characteristic frequencies. In recent years, some theoretical models of wave-induced fluid flow have been validated numerically, using finite-difference, finite-element, and reflectivity algorithms applied to Biot’s equations of poroelasticity. Application of theoretical models to real seismic data requires further studies using broadband laboratory and field measurements of attenuation and dispersion for different rocks as well as development of more robust methods for estimating dissipation attributes from field data.

Seismic wave attenuation and dispersion resulting from wave-induced flow in porous rocks — A review

Recent work has rendered possible the formulation of a rigorous model for the propagation of pressure waves in bubbly liquids. The derivation of this model is reviewed heuristically, and the predictions for the small‐amplitude case are compared with the data sets of several investigators. The data concern the phase speed, attenuation, and transmission coefficient through a layer of bubbly liquid. It is found that the model works very well up to volume fractions of 1%–2% provided that bubble resonances play a negligible role. Such is the case in a mixture of many bubble sizes or, when only one or a few sizes are present, away from the resonant frequency regions for these sizes. In the presence of resonance effects, the accuracy of the model is severely impaired. Possible reasons for the failure of the model in this case are discussed.

Linear pressure waves in bubbly liquids: Comparison between theory and experiments

Multiple scattering effects due to a random array of obstacles are considered. Employing a ``configurational averaging'' procedure, a criterion is obtained for the validity of approximate integral equations describing the various field quantities of interest. The extinction theorem is obtained and shown to give rise to the forward‐amplitude theorem of multiple scattering. In the limit of vanishing correlations in position, the complex propagation constant κ of the scattering medium is obtained. Under appropriate restrictions, the expression for κ is shown to include both the square‐root law of isotropic scatterers and the additive rule for cross sections valid for sufficiently low densities of anisotropic obstacles. Some specific examples from acoustics and electromagnetic theory then indicate that at least in the simplest cases the results remain valid for physically allowable densities of obstacles.
