A self lubricated and sealed pinion cartridge bearing assembly for use with a gear reduction system which may be used for example for providing rotating shaft support for a pinion shaft of a motor vehicle drive axle. The bearing assembly has a pair of anti-friction bearings having an outer and inner race and a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart rolling elements which roll along inner and outer raceways. A spacer is provided between the bearing inner races, and at least one seal is formed between the inner races and the spacer to circumferentially seal the inner races together. A pair of seals are further provided between the inner and outer races of each bearing at each outboard face to form barriers at the ends of the bearing assembly for retaining lubricating oil within the bearing assembly.

The bearing is an angular contact ball bearing with two asymmetric rows of balls, with a one-piece outer race and an inner race having two matched inner half-races side by side and able to be axially preloaded against each other when the bearing is mounted on the shaft of a gear the set of teeth of which cantilevers out from the bearing which has its row of larger-diameter balls on the same side as the set of teeth. Preloading may be provided by a nut screwed onto the shaft and tightened up against one of the inner half-races until the latter bears against the other inner half-race. A lock nut may hold the nut in position. The gear with its set of teeth and its shaft, the bearing with its large-diameter balls on the same side as the set of teeth, and the preloading device constitute a modular assembly, premounted and preloaded prior to fixing to a housing using a flange belonging to the outer race.

A pinion mounting with direct tapered roller bearing arrangement for differential gear mechanisms includes a first tapered roller bearing and a second tapered roller bearing to provide support for a pinion shaft, the pinion mounting and pinion shaft being removable from the differential gear mechanism without disassembly of other components of the differential gear mechanism. The first tapered roller bearing incorporates a continuous seal and o-ring, with the first tapered roller bearing either mounted to the differential gear mechanism case by retaining a mounting flange on the bearing cup, or threaded into the differential gear mechanism case by threads on the exterior of the bearing cup. A plurality of shims are used to set the bearing preload and to dimensionally set a pinion shaft gear with a ring gear of the differential gear mechanism.

Pinion mounting with direct tapered roller bearing arrangement

A housing for differential mechanism is formed in two pieces using a cold flow-forming process. Each of the housing portions is formed with an internal hemispherical surface, and semi-circular recesses, which when aligned form circular recesses within which a pinion shaft is seated. A subassembly that includes the pinion shaft, pinion gears, side bevel gears, and a thin plastic liner surrounding the subassembly is located within a lower housing portion so that the pinion shaft is seated in the recesses. The upper housing portion is inserted within the upper portion and welded. A ring gear is joined to a housing portion.

A power transmission system having a positive displacement pump which is driven by a prime mover, and an output member which is driven by a fluid discharged from the positive displacement pump, characterized by comprising a rotational direction switching mechanism for switching a rotational direction of the output member between forward direction and backward direction. The rotational direction switching mechanism comprises a mechanism for switching a direction of a torque applied to the output member through the fluid between forward direction and backward direction.

A pinion shaft of an axle drive bevel pinion mating with a bevel gear is disposed in two tapered roller bearings, the joint outer race of which is flanged onto the axle housing. In order to lubricate the tapered roller bearings with splash oil and avoid dirt deposits in the bearing area, the outer race of the tapered roller bearings has an oil feeding duct to a collecting pipe arranged above, and at its underside, an oil return duct to the transmission oil sump.

The differential has a cage (20) into which the axle shaft wheels (7,8) are fitted for support. To take the force in the direction of the drive shafts (5,6), the cage is made from a piece of tube. It has at least two diametrical borings through which the drive shafts can be fitted. The piece of tube can be forged into the shape of a ball. It can also have two further borings to take the axle bolts (11). The cage can be made from a rectangular piece of tube with rounded corners and suitable wall thicknesses. The walls of the cage with the borings for the drive shaft can be cambered inwards during the fitting process.

The gear-changing device for a manual gearbox has a single gear-change slot for the gear lever of the gearbox, in which slot forward gears of the gearbox can be selected stepwise by pivoting the gear lever backwards or forwards manually out of a central position. For this purpose, the pivoting motion of the gear lever is converted into a translational motion of an intermediate member which displaces gear-change plates with gear-change gates in a gate change mechanism relative to one another. These gear-change gates are penetrated by a sliding block which is guided in a constrained manner by them and which is displaced from a first into a second end position upon each pivoting movement of the gear lever in the gear-change slot. The sliding block is connected by way of a cable control to the gearbox, in which individual forward gears are selected depending on the end position.

The pinion shaft of a final drive pinion meshing with a ring gear is mounted in two tapered roller bearings, the common outer ring of which is flanged to the axle housing. In order to lubricate the tapered roller bearings with spray oil and to avoid dirt deposits in the bearing area, the outer ring of the tapered roller bearings has an oil inlet channel to a collecting pipe arranged above and an oil return channel to the transmission oil pan on its underside.
