Systems and methods for ip communication over a distributed antenna system transport

Methods and messages for performing registration of mobile stations (MS) in an unlicensed mobile access network (UMAN). URR (UMA radio resource) registration messages are exchanged between an MS and a UMA network controller (UNC) operating in the UMAN to register the MS. The MS may access the UMAN via a wireless access point (AP) that is communicatively coupled to the UNC via an IP network. The URR registration messages are sent between the MS and the UNC using an Up interface comprising a set of layered protocols over an underlying IP transport.

Registration messaging in an unlicensed mobile access telecommunications system

In a radio access network (24) a femto radio base station (28f) comprises a resident receiver (54) which acquires system information broadcast in a radio access network (24). At least part of the system information is used for building, at the femto radio base station (28f), a neighbor data structure (59) comprising information for neighboring cells. The neighbor data structure (59) is then used for building a neighbor list. The neighbor list is subsequently transmitted from the femto radio base station (28f) to a user equipment unit (30) served by the femto radio base station (28f). In some example embodiments and modes, the femto radio base station (28f) reports the neighbor data structure to a network node (26, 100) other than the femto radio base station. The other node (26, 100) uses the neighbor data structure for building the neighbor list at the other node. In some example embodiments and modes, acquisition of the system information comprises scanning a surrounding macro coverage area of the femto radio base station for obtaining cell identity information for detected cells. In other example embodiments and modes, the acquisition of the system information can additionally comprise camping on a macro cell and using/consulting at least one system information block in the camped-on macro cell is consulted/used for obtaining information about at least one neighboring cell.

Automatic building of neighbor lists in mobile system

A basestation for a cellular wireless communications network is able to configure itself for operation in the network, by selecting appropriate operating frequencies (in the case of a GSM network) or scrambling codes (in the case of a UMTS network), and appropriate transmit powers. This makes it practical for a large number of such basestations to be deployed in a network, within customers' premises, without requiring network intervention in each case.

Self-configuring cellular basestation

An access point, or base station, for a mobile communications network, such as a cellular communications network, can be installed by a user, for use within or close to their own home or office. The base station has a SIM card, and can establish secure communications with the core network of the mobile communications network over the user’s existing broadband internet connection. The base station is also able to obtain the necessary ciphering keys, in order to allow the mobile device to communicate securely with the base station, and hence with the core network.

A base station for a cellular wireless communications network has a first interface, enabling connection with a remote communications device using a cellular wireless communications protocol in the cellular wireless communications network. The base station also has a second interface, enabling connection over a wide area network, and a third interface, enabling connection over a local area network. Software enables communication over the wide area network between a remote communications device, connected to the first interface, and a core network of the cellular wireless communications network. Software can also enable the remote communications device to communicate with a device in the local area network, or with a server in the wide area network, without using the core network of the cellular wireless communications network.

Local area cellular basestation

A basestation in a cellular communications network is configured such that it has a different Location Area Identification from other local basestations in the cellular network. This has the effect that a Location Area Update procedure is performed when a mobile device wishes to camp onto that basestation. The basestation is able to configure itself automatically, to ensure that its Location Area Identification differs from other local basestations.

Automatic base station configuration

A user equipment device is authenticated in a WiFi access point, wherein the user equipment device is adapted to operate in a cellular network and in a WiFi communications link, and wherein the WiFi access point is co-located with a base station of the cellular network. After receiving from the user equipment device a request for access to the cellular network, keys are generated for authenticating the user equipment device in the cellular network and the keys are used to authenticate the user equipment device for the WiFi communications link with the WiFi access point. The keys may for example be one-time keys or fixed keys. More specifically, a dual mode UE is equipped with a (U)SIM application which can interact with a dual mode 3G+WLAN access pint to use the 3GPP authentication between the U(SIM) application and the 3G CN to create fresh keying material in the 3G Client and the 3G CN which the 3G CN then pushes to the AP as per the usual RANAP security mode control procedure over the lu/luh interface. The fresh keying material, once installed in the UEs WLAN station and multi-standard cells WLAN AP, will act as a pre-shared key which removes the need to pre-configure the WLAN station and the AP with that shared secret.
