Cette these est consacree a une etude de l’aspect en chinois mandarin. Elle porte parti- culierement sur les expressions duratives. Les expressions duratives sont souvent proposees dans la litterature en tant que test de telicite des classes aspectuelles de verbes, en fran- cais comme en chinois mandarin. Les linguistes qui travaillent sur le chinois mandarin font souvent une analogie entre les expressions adverbiales en pendant et en en du francais et les expressions duratives postverbales et preverbales du chinois mandarin. Dans le present travail, en donnant une analyse a l’interface syntactico-semantique des expressions duratives postverbales et preverbales en chinois mandarin, nous envisageons de montrer que les expres- sions duratives en chinois mandarin et leurs homologues en francais ne peuvent pas recevoir la meme analyse malgre leurs similarites. Les etudes s’organisent de la maniere suivante : le premier chapitre vise a aborder des questions concernant l’aspect lexical en chinois mandarin. Le deuxieme chapitre se centre sur l’aspect grammatical. Nous nous penchons sur le suffixe verbal -le et la particule finale le. Le troisieme chapitre s’interesse a la structure syntaxique et a la semantique de l’expression durative postverbale dans les phrases qui comportent un seul groupe verbal. Dans le quatrieme chapitre, nous suggerons une analyse semantique de l’expression durative postverbale dans les constructions de copie du verbe et de coordination. Le dernier chapitre est axe sur trois types d’expressions duratives preverbales et une analyse a l’interface syntactico-semantique est proposee.

This paper argues that Rizzi's (1997) ”fine structure of the left periphery” can be applied to the medial domain in Mandarin Chinese (i.e., the domain between TP and vP) and that this domain can license both Topic and Focus under distinct functional projections, with TopicP dominating FocusP. This paper explains the information-theoretic status of preposed objects by detailing the structural restrictions associated with the relevant topic and focus readings, respectively, and elaborating on their differences. By adopting this joint approach -one which is different from previous analyses -I show that preposed objects can be either Topic or Focus in the medial domain. This paper then presents a unified account for the preposed object construction, the so-called verb-copying construction and various other related phenomena.

Two Functional Projections in the Medial Domain in Chinese

The mapping between grammatical functions and thematic roles of resultative constructions has been widely discussed in different frameworks of syntax, and theories have been proposed to account for the mismatches between them. The question behind the construction of these mapping theories always lies in the choice of suppressing one of the two competing roles or fusing them in order to maintain the Consistency Principle or Uniqueness Condition. However, these mechanisms always involve ad hoc additional mapping rules which need further justification or they may not be applicable to other mapping phenomena. In this paper, I am going to analyze the mapping phenomenon of resultative constructions in Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese by drawing insights from conceptual semantics (Jackendoff, 1990). I will show how conceptual structures can capture the special properties of resultative constructions and handle the mapping phenomenon mentioned above naturally.

Chapter 7. The V-copy construction in Mandarin: A case temporarily reopened

Abstract In this paper, I explore the components of the sideward movement involved in the verb copying construction proposed by Cheng (2007). I first present some facts of the resultative de-clause of the verb copying construction which seems to be puzzling under Cheng’s analysis. An extended analysis is then proposed. Under the extended analysis, I propose that the sideward movement mechanism involved in the resultative de-clause can be further analyzed as internal topicalization plus differential object marking. This analysis of sideward movement is also attested in the manner de-clause of the verb copying construction. The proposed components relate the sideward movement in the verb copying construction to the syntactic mechanisms which are also observed widely in Mandarin Chinese and other languages.

The Components of Sideward Movement in the Verb Copying Construction in Mandarin Chinese

This paper presents a formal analysis of the verb copy construction in Modern Chinese. Unlike the previous analyses, in which this construction is analyzed as a single-headed structure with the second VP as the head and the first VP as an adjunct, our analysis treats the verb copy construction as a coordinated VP, with each VP as a co-head. We further propose that the first VP subsumes the following VPs in this construction. We also show that this alternative approach can successfully capture and explain all of the three key properties that characterize this construction.
