The chemical, microbiologic, and toxic characteristics of povidone-iodine solution, a commonly used antiseptic agent, are addressed in a collective review of relevant works published from 1956 to the present. Interactions of this agent with the thyroid gland and the kidneys and its toxicity at the cellular and systemic level are discussed.

Iodine-loaded metal organic framework as growth-triggered antimicrobial agent

Rechargeable lithium/iodine (Li/I2) batteries have attracted much attention because of their high gravimetric/volumetric energy densities, natural abundance and low cost. However, problems of the system, such as highly unstable iodine species under high temperature, their subsequent dissolution in electrolyte and continually reacting with lithium anode prevent the practical use of rechargeable Li/I2 cells. A polymer-iodine composite (polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine) with high thermostability is employed as cathode material in rechargeable Li/I2 battery with an organic electrolyte. Because of the chemical interaction between polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyiodide, most of the polyiodide in the cathode could be effectively trapped during charging/discharging. In-situ Raman observation revealed the evolution of iodine species in this system could be controlled during the process of I5- ↔ I3- ↔ I-. Herein, the Li/I2 battery delivered a high discharge capacity of 278 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C and exhibited a very low capacity decay rate of 0.019% per cycle for prolonged 1100 charge/discharge cycles at 2 C. More importantly, a high areal capacity of 4.1 mAh cm-2 was achieved for the electrode with high iodine loading of 21.2 mg cm-2. This work may inspire new approach to design the Li/I2 (or Li/polyiodide) system with long cycle life.

Investigation of the iodine–poly(vinylpyrrolidone) interaction employed in the determination of biocidal iodine by colorimetric solid-phase extraction

Structure of polyvinylpyrrolidone‐iodine (povidone‐iodine)

Iodine complexes of formula (RMCONR2R3)2.AI3 (I) are new. In the formula, R1=1-5C alkyl, aryl or di-(1-5C) alkylamino; R2 and R3 = 1-5C alkyl or aryl, or R1 plus R2 together form (CH2)n, where n = 3-5; and A = H or an alkali metal. Complexes (I) are prepd. by reacting R1CONR2R3 with I2 at 40-160 degrees C or with I2 and AI at room temp. (I) have bactericidal and fungicidal activity and are useful as disinfectants, together with usual carriers and diluents. (I) is 1-50 wt. % of these compsns. They are also useful as I2-carriers for chemical reactions. (I) are stable and contain I2 in readily available form, but do not have the high room-temp. vapour pressure of I2 so remain stable even on prolonged storage.

Stable iodine complexes with amides ureas and lactams - useful in disinfectants as bactericides and fungicides

Hydrogen triiodide adducts were prepared from N,N-dimethylacetamide, N-alkylpyrrolidone derivatives, and polyvinylpyrrolidone, and their structures were investigated by IR spectra and X-ray structure analyses and compared with the structure of povidone-iodine USP. The results suggest that the iodine in povidone-iodine USP is complexed by the polymer such that a proton is fixed via a short hydrogen bond between two carbonyl groups of two pyrrolidone rings and that a triiodide anion is bound ionically to this cation.
