This paper presents the design, testing, and analysis of a clover structured monopole antenna for super wideband applications. The proposed antenna has a wide impedance bandwidth (−10 dB bandwidth) from 1.9 GHz to frequency over 30 GHz. The clover shaped antenna with a compact size of 50 mm × 45 mm is designed and fabricated on an FR4 substrate with a thickness of 1.6 mm. Parametric study has been performed by varying the parameters of the clover to obtain an optimum wide band characteristics. Furthermore, the prototype introduces a method of achieving super wide bandwidth by deploying fusion of elliptical patch geometries (clover shaped) with a semi elliptical ground plane, loaded with a V-cut at the ground. The proposed antenna has a 14 dB bandwidth from 5.9 to 13.1 GHz, which is suitable for ultra wideband (UWB) outdoor propagation. The prototype is experimentally validated for frequencies within and greater than UWB. Transfer function, impulse response, and group delay has been plotted in order to address the time domain characteristics of the proposed antenna with fidelity factor values. The possible applications cover wireless local area network, C-band, Ku-band, K-band operations, Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, and Wireless USB.

Super wideband printed monopole antenna for ultra wideband applications

A compact slot antenna with an overall dimension of 30 × 30 × 1.6 mm3 is proposed for dual band applications. The radiating element is a hexagonal shape patch which protrudes from a Co-Planar Waveguide (CPW) feed into a step shape slot. The slot is basically rectangular in shape and is extended by inserting rectangular cuts of different sizes on the ground plane around it. The ultrawide impedance bandwidth is achieved using asymmetric feed line along with extended rectangular cuts around the slot. For realizing the second band for personal communication system applications (near 1.9 GHz), a metallic stub of quarter wave length is attached at the top of the slot. The measured impedance bandwidth (for S11 < −10 dB) is 110 MHz (1.86–1.97 GHz) for the first band and 9 GHz (3.0–12.0 GHz) for the second band. The antenna is further characterized by omnidirectional radiation patterns in the H-plane, dumb-bell shape radiation patterns in the E-plane and a peak gain of 3–5 dBi over the ultrawideband. A compact asymmetric slot dual band antenna fed by CPW for PCS and UWB applications

This article proposes a comprehensive study for designing an antenna for ultra wide band (UWB) communications. The techniques involved for designing an antenna, the need for its use and effects of those techniques on the UWB performance of the proposed antenna are investigated to develop an intuition and to gain an insight into the antenna design. The work studies the design methodologies and constitutes a design procedure. This way of studying the design methodologies for designing an UWB antenna is proposed as a novel approach in this article, as it gives a clear insight into the UWB antenna design. Various aspects of the UWB characteristics of the proposed antenna are shown as comparison with an analogous classic design to view the improvement in each and every aspect of the essential parameters of the UWB. Study of the design evolution of an antenna and its performance for UWB communications

This work systematically develops and proposes the simplest form of Neural Network (NN) architecture for efficient detection of signals in an impulse radio (IR) ultra wideband (UWB) time hopping (TH) communication system. The simplicity of the NN receiver ascribes to the subtle change in the training method, which contrary to the conventional ones, requires the network to be trained with only 10000 symbols in an ideal condition without any channel impairments to allow the receiver to learn only the desired signal patterns. The detection efficiency of the NN receiver is attributed to a key parameter entitled as an optimal average cost function which is formulated from the soft decision statistics that is reached by the NN receiver in 3000 training epochs owing to the prudent selection of all hyper-parameters. Both the simplicity and detection efficiency of the NN receiver are quantified by i) a comparison as well as a comprehensive performance evaluation conducted with the classic Rake receiver structures in a broad range of chaotic communication scenarios involving mobility and ii) derivation of simple expressions to compute the computational complexities. The performance results demonstrate that the proposed NN receiver cuts-down the computational complexity by 76% while attaining and maintaining a very high performance gain of 30 dB in signal-to-noise ratio on average for all test scenarios.

A Computationally Lightest and Robust Neural Network Receiver for Ultra Wideband Time Hopping Communication Systems

A new modeling methodology for estimation of the parameters of the underlying multipath structure in an ultrawideband (UWB) indoor propagation channel is proposed in this article based on measurement campaign data available for a typical modern laboratory building. Issues inherent in generic multipath parameter estimation procedures such as limitations of curve fitting techniques, ambiguity in identifying cluster regions, and arbitrariness in estimating cluster and ray parameters accentuate a lack of transparency in the whole parameter estimation process and prevent the performance evaluation of different UWB physical layer proposals. A ramification of such techniques is that they are often too complex and intractable. The proposed approach, in this article, addresses these issues and offers a simple, tractable, easy to implement, and accurate solution based on a rationale proposing that the true behavior of the multipath structure is dependent on the structure of the considered environment itself and not on any additional reflectors. The results obtained from the proposed model are compared against the IEEE 802.15.4a CM1 and CM2 channel models. The proposed model establishes a normative to compare and evaluate performances between different UWB propagation models in realistic environments.

A New Modeling Methodology for Multipath Parameter Estimation in Ultrawideband Channels

A novel compact planar monopole antenna for UWB applications is proposed in this paper. The proposed novelty of the antenna is attributed to the addition of suitable beveled stubs to a basic circular geometry of the radiator as an improved impedance matching technique to achieve enhanced radiation performances. The feed circuit is a tapered microstrip line with a matching section over a semi-elliptical ground plane. The proposed antenna achieves su-cient impedance bandwidth for a VSWR < 2 for frequencies from 3{15GHz covering the entire UWB range (3.1{10.6GHz), which is verifled experimentally. Also this design achieves good gain, constant group delay and a near omni- directional radiation pattern over the UWB band. The UWB characteristics of the antenna are evaluated in frequency and time domains. Results reveal that the proposed antenna has ∞at transfer function, linear phase and good impulse response with virtually no ringing which are the essential requirements for an UWB antenna for e-cient pulse transmission/reception. The simulated and measured results of these parameters are presented. The performance results of the novel antenna with other designs is also compared and presented.
