Capitalism and Financial Development: The Case of Mortgage Markets in France, 1807-1899

TL;DR: The authors analyzed the French mortgage market in nineteenth-century France and analyzed the financial development that accompanied the rise of capitalism there, finding that borrowing went on outside modern financial institutions, raising serious doubts about the argument that connects financial development and economic growth.

Pious Bequests in Wills: A Statistical Analysis

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors employed maximum likelihood methods to analyze the increase in pious bequests in early modern French wills and found that at any level of wealth, pious bequesques rose over the course of the seventeenth century and that the increase was most pronounced among the literate and women.
