Sentiment analysis and opinion mining is the field of study that analyzes people's opinions, sentiments, evaluations, attitudes, and emotions from written language. It is one of the most active research areas in natural language processing and is also widely studied in data mining, Web mining, and text mining. In fact, this research has spread outside of computer science to the management sciences and social sciences due to its importance to business and society as a whole. The growing importance of sentiment analysis coincides with the growth of social media such as reviews, forum discussions, blogs, micro-blogs, Twitter, and social networks. For the first time in human history, we now have a huge volume of opinionated data recorded in digital form for analysis. Sentiment analysis systems are being applied in almost every business and social domain because opinions are central to almost all human activities and are key influencers of our behaviors. Our beliefs and perceptions of reality, and the choices we make, are largely conditioned on how others see and evaluate the world. For this reason, when we need to make a decision we often seek out the opinions of others. This is true not only for individuals but also for organizations. This book is a comprehensive introductory and survey text. It covers all important topics and the latest developments in the field with over 400 references. It is suitable for students, researchers and practitioners who are interested in social media analysis in general and sentiment analysis in particular. Sentiment Analysis and Opinion Mining

The inherent nature of social media content poses serious challenges to practical applications of sentiment analysis. We present VADER, a simple rule-based model for general sentiment analysis, and compare its effectiveness to eleven typical state-of-practice benchmarks including LIWC, ANEW, the General Inquirer, SentiWordNet, and machine learning oriented techniques relying on Naive Bayes, Maximum Entropy, and Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithms. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, we first construct and empirically validate a gold-standard list of lexical features (along with their associated sentiment intensity measures) which are specifically attuned to sentiment in microblog-like contexts. We then combine these lexical features with consideration for five general rules that embody grammatical and syntactical conventions for expressing and emphasizing sentiment intensity. Interestingly, using our parsimonious rule-based model to assess the sentiment of tweets, we find that VADER outperforms individual human raters (F1 Classification Accuracy = 0.96 and 0.84, respectively), and generalizes more favorably across contexts than any of our benchmarks.

BACKGROUND We aimed to assess the feasibility of a video-augmented fluoroscopy (VAF) technique using a camera-augmented mobile C-arm (CamC) for distal interlocking of intramedullary nails. METHODS Three surgeons performed distal interlocking on seven pairs of cadaveric bovine carpal bones using the VAF system and conventional fluoroscopy. We compared radiation exposure, procedure time, and drilling quality between the VAF system and conventional fluoroscopic guidance. RESULTS Distal interlocking using VAF significantly reduced the number of fluoroscopic images compared with conventional fluoroscopy (P < 0.05). No significant difference in overall procedure time (P = 0.96) or drilling quality (P = 0.12) was detected. VAF demonstrated improvement in radiation exposure when used by a less experienced surgeon (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION VAF is a feasible technique for distal interlocking. Overlaid visualization of the osseous anatomy in relation to the surgical field of view appears to improve surgeons' perception of relevant structures and their spatial orientation for the use of surgical instruments.

Typically, people have a misconception about blockchain as they associate this technology with cryptocurrency. This chapter does not focus, however, on bitcoin or cryptocurrencies that pertain to its intrinsic value. Rather, the authors focus on the disintermediation feature of blockchain technology by providing insights into how this technology could substitute for the functions and roles of the intermediary. The findings show that blockchain technology is not equipped with financing and physical distribution functions. The current research further demonstrates that most of the blockchain service providers that are listed in the Liechtenstein Blockchain Act are required to perform the traditional roles of an intermediary. Thus, blockchain technology is not found to support a full concept of disintermediation. This chapter is vital in order for existing intermediaries to gain a deeper understanding of how to analyze and optimize their existing functions and roles while adjusting their business model in the token-based economy.

Revealing the Disintermediation Concept of Blockchain Technology: How Intermediaries Gain From Blockchain Adoption in a New Business Model

China has been experiencing a substantial growth in patent applications. Is this increase ac-companied by a similar increase in patent value? To assess this question, we examine the citation lag of Chinese patents as a proxy of patent value in comparison with patents from the US, Eu-rope, Japan and Korea. Our empirical analysis comprises a unique data set of 60,000 patents with priority years between 2000 and 2010. Utilizing Cox regressions, our results show that the Chi-nese patents suffer from a large citation lag in comparison to international patents, indicating a lower value. However, we find empirical support for a positive moderation of this effect by the patent’s technological scope, the breadth of the patent’s technological base, and patent claims. China shows a strong dynamic in the field of patenting and our results suggest that the gap be-tween Chinese patents and international patents might narrow down in the near future.

The Value of Chinese Patents: An Empirical Investigation of Citation Lags

This study explains the positive branding effects and the trademark-related risks of the New Generic Top-Level Domain (NGTLD) program. It can be shown that Associative Network Memory Theory explains why the connection of the brand with a suitable generic NGTLD can increase brand awareness. Additionally, the Signaling Theory can explain why brand (and some generic) NGTLDs can be used as signals. Brand NGTLDs can be used to protect the brand from negative influences by third parties in the digital world. This study compares the chances and the risks of NGTLDs and recommends a strategy, which should minimize the trademark-related risks for brand owners. An extensive survey of prior literature was applied, as were interviews with a sample of 10 experts who were involved in the decision and the application process for NGTLDs.

Evaluation of New Generic Top Level Domains from a Brand and a Trademark Perspective

There is disagreement in the literature concerning the impact of regulations on firms’ development. While some researchers believe that regulation impedes companies’ development (Poel et al., 2014; Jalilian et al., 2007), others argue that regulations enable companies’ development (Peck et al., 2018; Mayson et al., 2014). This paper aims to contribute to a better understanding of the impact of financial regulations on development of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) firms. In-depth semi-structured open-ended interviews have been conducted with 20 Small Medium Enterprise (SME) DLT companies in Europe during April and May 2019. Our results show that the expected impact of financial regulation can be ambiguous as it can both enable and constrain a firm’s development. This is in line with Kitching et al. (2015) theory of regulation as a dynamic force.
