As a fascinating conjugated polymer, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has become a new research hotspot and drawn broad interdisciplinary attention as a metal-free and visible-light-responsive photocatalyst in the arena of solar energy conversion and environmental remediation. This is due to its appealing electronic band structure, high physicochemical stability, and “earth-abundant” nature. This critical review summarizes a panorama of the latest progress related to the design and construction of pristine g-C3N4 and g-C3N4-based nanocomposites, including (1) nanoarchitecture design of bare g-C3N4, such as hard and soft templating approaches, supramolecular preorganization assembly, exfoliation, and template-free synthesis routes, (2) functionalization of g-C3N4 at an atomic level (elemental doping) and molecular level (copolymerization), and (3) modification of g-C3N4 with well-matched energy levels of another semiconductor or a metal as a cocatalyst to form heterojunction nanostructures. Understanding TiO2 photocatalysis: mechanisms and materials.

Graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets are extracted, produced via simple liquid-phase exfoliation of a layered bulk material, g-C3N4. The resulting nanosheets, having ≈2 nm thickness and N/C atomic ratio of 1.31, show an optical bandgap of 2.65 eV. The carbon nitride nanosheets are demonstrated to exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution under visible light.

Exfoliated Graphitic Carbon Nitride Nanosheets as Efficient Catalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Under Visible Light

Charge kinetics is highly critical in determining the quantum efficiency of solar-to-chemical conversion in photocatalysis, and this includes, but is not limited to, the separation of photoexcited electron–hole pairs, utilization of plasmonic hot carriers and delivery of photo-induced charges to reaction sites, as well as activation of reactants by energized charges. In this review, we highlight the recent progress on probing and steering charge kinetics toward designing highly efficient photocatalysts and elucidate the fundamentals behind the combinative use of controlled synthesis, characterization techniques (with a focus on spectroscopic characterizations) and theoretical simulations in photocatalysis studies. We first introduce the principles of various processes associated with charge kinetics that account for or may affect photocatalysis, from which a set of parameters that are critical to photocatalyst design can be summarized. We then outline the design rules for photocatalyst structures and their corresponding synthetic approaches. The implementation of characterization techniques and theoretical simulations in different steps of photocatalysis, together with the associated fundamentals and working mechanisms, are also presented. Finally, we discuss the challenges and opportunities for photocatalysis research at this unique intersection as well as the potential impact on other research fields.

Steering charge kinetics in photocatalysis: intersection of materials syntheses, characterization techniques and theoretical simulations

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been the most intensively investigated binary transition metal oxide in the past four decades as indicated by Figure S1. Furthermore, the annual number of papers published on TiO2 has seen a continuous increase, particularly since the beginning of this century (Figure S2). This is understandable when one considers the wide range of applications of TiO2 from the conventional areas (i.e., pigment, cosmetic, toothpaste, and paint) to the later developed functional areas such as photoelectrochemical cell,(1-3) dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs),(4-11) photocatalysis,(12-24) catalysis,(25-31) photovoltaic cell,(32-34) lithium ion batteries,(35-41) sensors,(42-46) electron field emission,(47-51) microwave absorbing material, biomimetic growth, and biomedical treatments.(52-57) Nearly all these functional applications of TiO2 fall in the scope of energy, environment, and health, which are definitely the three most important and challenging themes facing the Human race that need to be addressed in this century. Besides the apparent merits including nontoxicity, elemental abundance, good chemical stability, and easy synthesis, TiO2 has attracted strong research interest worldwide due to its physicochemical properties for realizing various functions.(15, 58, 59) Especially, very encouraging progresses in photocatalysis and DSSCs with the involvement of TiO2 have greatly stimulated the rapid development of TiO2 crystals with controllable phase, size, shape, defect, and heteroatom.(58, 60-68)

Titanium dioxide crystals with tailored facets

The properties and applications of materials are significantly controlled by their physical characteristics, such as size, shape, and structural state. Many processes are governed by interface reactions by which the surface energy and reactivity depend on the spatial configuration, coordination, and structural state of surface atoms and molecules. For crystals, this dependence is directly related to the expression of specific crystallographic faces, which exhibit different surface structures and atomic configurations. These differences explain why some applications, such as molecular adsorption and desorption, gas sensing, drug molecule delivery and release, and heterogeneous catalysis are highly sensitive to the surface atomic structures. Recent progress in the engineering of crystal morphology has included the synthesis of polyhedral silver nanocrystals by the polyol method, the epitaxially seeded growth of highly faceted Pt-Pd nanocrystals, and the controlled overgrowth of Pd-Au core–shell structures enclosed by {111} facets. Apart from these metallic nanocrystals, binary or ternary compounds with preferentially developed facets have also been reported. The facet effect is an important factor for heterogeneous photocatalysts, because surface atom arrangement and coordination intrinsically determine the adsorption of reactant molecules, surface transfer between photoexcited electrons and reactant molecules, and desorption of product molecules. This phenomenon has been well studied in TiO2 photocatalysts. TiO2 is one of the most extensively studied photocatalysts owing to its abundance, nontoxicity, and stability. However, for practical applications, pure TiO2 is not a good candidate because it is only active under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation owing to the band gap of 3.2 eV for the anatase phase. Therefore, band-gap engineering is required to use TiO2 as a water-splitting catalyst under visible-light irradiation. Reduced TiO2 (TiO2 x), containing Ti or O vacancies, has been reported to show visible-light absorption. Various strategies have been applied to synthesize reduced TiO2, such as heating under vacuum [8] or reducing gas, laser irradiation, and high-energy particle bombardment (electrons or Ar ions). A big challenge for the application of reduced TiO2 is that the surface oxygen defects are highly unstable in air owing to the susceptibility of Ti toward oxidation by O2. [13] Recently, we reported a facile one-step combustion method to synthesize partially reduced TiO2. [14] The presence of Ti in the sample extends the photoresponse of TiO2 from the UV to the visible light region, which leads to high visible-light photocatalytic activity for the generation of hydrogen gas from water. However, in the rapid and harsh combustion process, there is very limited control over the crystallization process, which results in the irregularly shaped products. Herein we report the development of a simple solution method to grow non-stoichiometric rutile TiO2 crystals with desired facets. The incorporation of Ti, which extends the light absorption from the UV into the visible range, along with the development of facets with high reactivity, results in a material exhibiting greatly enhanced photocatalytic H2 production activity relative to the combustion product we reported before.
