Journal ArticleDOI
Bioprospecting North Atlantic microalgae with fast growth and high polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content for microalgae-based technologies
TL;DR: A screening pipeline is designed, targeting a focused search and selection for marine microalgal strains from extreme North Atlantic locations with high robustness and biomass production, and increased levels of EPA and DHA.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparing EPA production and fatty acid profiles of three Phaeodactylum tricornutum strains under western Norwegian climate conditions.
Pia Steinrücken,Siv Kristin Prestegard,Jeroen Hendrik de Vree,Julia E. Storesund,Bernadette Pree,Svein A. Mjøs,Svein Rune Erga +6 more
TL;DR: Looking at the potential of the climate conditions in Bergen, western Norway for outdoor cultivation of P. tricornutum in flat panel photobioreactors and cultivated three different strains simultaneously revealed more significant differences between outdoor and laboratory-grown cultures than between the strains, and higher EPA contents in outdoor grown cultures.
Journal ArticleDOI
Specific Metabolites in a Phaeodactylum tricornutum Strain Isolated from Western Norwegian Fjord Water.
Siv Kristin Prestegard,Svein Rune Erga,Pia Steinrücken,Svein A. Mjøs,Gjert Knutsen,Jens Rohloff +5 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that the array of pheromones and antimicrobial substances could be part of an allelopathic strategy of the BMB strain, dominated by oval cells, thus reflecting the benthic life stage of this morphological form.
Journal ArticleDOI
Enhancing EPA Content in an Arctic Diatom: A Factorial Design Study to Evaluate Interactive Effects of Growth Factors.
TL;DR: A mathematical model revealed that both growth phase and salinity, alone and in combination, influenced the EPA content significantly, and might be related to a decreased silica content, an accumulation of storage lipids containing EPA, or both.
Journal ArticleDOI
Techno-economic analysis of microalgae production for aquafeed in Norway
Bárbara Vázquez-Romero,José A. Perales,Jeroen H. de Vree,Hanna Böpple,Pia Steinrücken,Maria J. Barbosa,Dorinde M.M. Kleinegris,Jesús Ruiz +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper , a feasibility study of microalgae (Phaeodactylum tricornutum) production in the aquaculture sector is presented, based on pilot-scale experimental results using tubular PBR in Norway.
