The present invention provides a method and apparatus for using light emitting diodes for curing and various solid state lighting applications. The method includes a novel method for cooling the light emitting diodes and mounting the same on heat pipe in a manner which delivers ultra high power in UV, visible and IR regions. Furthermore, the unique LED packaging technology of the present invention utilizes heat pipes that perform very efficiently in very compact space. Much more closely spaced LEDs operating at higher power levels and brightness are possible because the thermal energy is transported in an axial direction down the heat pipe and away from the light-emitting direction rather than a radial direction in nearly the same plane as the “p-n” junction.

Method and apparatus for using light emitting diodes

Integrated circuit package (10) includes a substrate (12) comprising a porous ceramic body (14). A non-porous covering (16) provides a hermetic seal around the porous ceramic body (14). A heat transfer liquid (18) partially fills pores (30) of the porous ceramic body (14). A plurality of integrated circuit chips (20) are attached to a surface of the substrate (12) by epoxy, solder or other bonds (22). On an opposite surface, the substrate (12) includes a plurality of heat transfer fins (24). In use, the heat transfer liquid (18) in the ceramic body (14) is vaporized to fill the balance of the pores (30) and condensed in a continuous heat pipe cycle to remove heat from the integrated circuits (20) mounted on the substrate.

High performance substrate, electronic package and integrated circuit cooling process

An optical irradiation device incorporating a cluster of LEDs arranged so that shaped facets of adjacent LEDs come together to increase the packing density of LEDs in the cluster. A light guide collects light emitted by the LEDs. Two or more light guides and LED clusters may be arranged in series to produce a single light beam. A heat pipe is provided to conduct heat away from the LEDs. The heat pipe may be annular and contain an inner storage space for batteries or the like.

Optical irradiation device

A well logging scintillation detector has a gamma ray detector crystal (17) with a window (19) at one end and a single or multi-layer cladding (31) surrounding the remainder of the crystal, with a reflective layer (57) surrounding the cladding. The reflective layer is surrounded by an elastomer (59) with reflective particles which is surrounded by a casing which is metal. The window has a flat glass plate connected to the crystal with an optical coupler, and a clear elastomer optically coupled to the plate.

Long-life oil well logging assembly

A thermal management system includes micro heat pipes extending radially outward from a heat sink which surrounds a heat source, rapidly conducting thermal energy away from the heat source, improving significantly the storage of thermal energy in the heat sink, and providing a means for later dissipating thermal energy from the heat sink to an ultimate heat sink over a period of time.

Disclosed is an improved compensated density well logging apparatus which provides a mechanical linkage driven by an electric gear motor for extension of a thin cylindrical pad containing radioactive source and detection equipment exteriorly of the tool housing so as to penetrate the filter cake and eliminate or reduce the distorting effect of the filter cake and well bore fluid. A spring biased caliper arm is used to justify the tool and extended pad against the side of a well bore during measurement. The linkage supporting and positioning the caliper arm includes a pivot pin which extends exteriorly of the tool housing to engage two parallel aligned guide wheels riding in grooves formed exteriorly in the tool housing so as to reduce friction and prevent lateral movement of the linkage. This provides for a more accurate reading of the variable thickness of the filter cake and well bore diameter at varying depths within the well bore. A linear motion transducer including a Titanium shell is used to translate the instantaneous position of the caliper arm with respect to the tool housing into a measurement of the well bore diameter and filter cake thickness. The linear motion transducer is encapsulated in a resilient bellows filled with a low viscosity fluid which is pressure equalized with the drilling fluid so as to facilitate the rapid movements of the caliper arm and linkage. A slot engaging a pin within the caliper arm linkage allows the complete retraction of the caliper arm without affecting the fully extended position of the radioactive pad. Two linearly aligned springs of different spring load constants are utilized to maintain a constant and linearized force urging the caliper arm outward with respect to the tool housing.

Compensated density well logging tool

Well bore logging apparatus including electrical components cooling apparatus. An operating chamber and a heat sink chamber are incorporated. A heat transfer chamber encloses both operating chamber and heat sink chamber. A wicking material fills a portion of the transfer chamber to be in thermal connection with both operating chamber and heat sink chamber. The heat sink chamber contains a heat sink material. A heat transfer medium is contained in the heat transfer chamber which is vaporized by heat from the operating chamber, then condensed by the heat sink medium to be absorbed into the wicking member and transported through the wicking member by capillary action back to the operating chamber for revaporization. Heat transfer chamber is isolated from operating chamber.

Well logging electronics cooling system

Apparatus for insulating enclosed electronic devices against damaging temperatures when used in deep, hot well bores. Includes a first vacuum chamber insulating means defined by outer casing of well-logging tool and inner casing. First vacuum chamber defines a components chamber to shield contents against the temperature in a well bore. A second vacuum chamber mounted within components chamber is defined by an outer tube and an inner tube. Outer tube has a thickened wall and is of material suited to serve as heat sink within components chamber. Second vacuum chamber defines detection chamber to shield contents against the temperature within components chamber. Thickened wall is undercut to define a thin wall adapted to function as a window for radiation to pass from an earth formation outside said logging tool into a radiation detector disposed within said detection chamber. Further includes radiation screen located in said undercut and around said window to shield said detector means from radiation below a selected level of energy.
