Present day challenges in understanding the geomagnetic hazard to national power grids

TL;DR: In a recent workshop in South Africa, UK and South African scientists and engineers discussed the current understanding of this hazard, as it affects major power systems in Europe and Africa as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI

The variability and predictability of the IRI B0, B1 parameters over Grahamstown, South Africa

TL;DR: In this paper, the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) parameters B0 and B1 provide a representation of the thickness and shape, respectively, of the F2 layer of the bottomside ionosphere.
Proceedings ArticleDOI

An investigation of ionospheric disturbances over South Africa during the magnetic storm on 15 May 2005

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of the 15 May 2005 severe geomagnetic storm on the South African ionosphere were studied using ground-based and satellite observations using Global Positioning System (GPS)-derived total electron content (TEC) variations from the south African network of dual frequency GPS receivers.

Ensemble Estimation of Network Parameters: A Tool to Improve the Real-time Estimation of GICs in the South African Power Network

TL;DR: This work presents a new approach of using an ensemble of network parameters estimates calculated from simultaneously solving pairs of time instances of the governing GIC equation, and shows that errors in the GIC modelling chain are absorbed into the network parameter estimates.
