Perception of the speech code.

A new technique for the analysis of speech, the perceptual linear predictive (PLP) technique, is presented and examined. This technique uses three concepts from the psychophysics of hearing to derive an estimate of the auditory spectrum: (1) the critical-band spectral resolution, (2) the equal-loudness curve, and (3) the intensity-loudness power law. The auditory spectrum is then approximated by an autoregressive all-pole model. A 5th-order all-pole model is effective in suppressing speaker-dependent details of the auditory spectrum. In comparison with conventional linear predictive (LP) analysis, PLP analysis is more consistent with human hearing. The effective second formant F2' and the 3.5-Bark spectral-peak integration theories of vowel perception are well accounted for. PLP analysis is computationally efficient and yields a low-dimensional representation of speech. These properties are found to be useful in speaker-independent automatic-speech recognition.

In listening to speech, one typically reduces the number and variety of the many sounds with which he is bombarded by casting them into one or another of the phoneme categories that his language allows. Thus, a listener will identify as b, for example, quite a large number of acoustically different sounds. Although these differences are likely to be many and various, some of them will occur along an acoustic continuum that contains cues for a different phoneme, such as d. This is important for the present study because it provides a basis for the question to be examined here: whether or not, with similar acoustic differences, a listener can better discriminate between sounds that lie on opposite sides of a phoneme boundary than he can between sounds that fall within the same phoneme category. The discovery of spoken language

Previous research with simplified, synthetic speech has shown that formant transitions, i.e., relatively rapid shifts in frequency, can be cues for the aural identification of various consonant phones and, further, that the same transition will apparently serve for consonants that have the same articulatory place of production. The data of the present series of experiments permit a tentative specification of certain frequency‐positions, or “loci,” which appear to be characteristic of consonants according to their place of production, and toward which the transitions of the vowel formants point. Taking account of these loci provides a basis for an economical description of many of the data concerning the role of transitions in consonant identification.
