A review of fault tolerant control strategies applied to proton exchange membrane fuel cell systems

The main problem in renewable energy system is the variation in power generation from time to time due to the intermittent nature of the renewable sources. Miss matching between power generation and load power causes a deviation from the desired voltage and frequency in power supply. A power flow control of a standalone photovoltaic-wind-battery Hybrid Renewable Energy System (HRES) for stand-alone application is presented here to balance the power generation and load power. Photovoltaic (PV) and wind are the primary power sources and battery acts as backup source to balance the power generation and load power. In spite of sudden load changes and changes in the power generation from PV power and wind power the power balance between the supply and demand effectively maintained by the proposed fuzzy logic controller (FLC). All the renewable sources and backup source are linked to a DC bus through dc-dc converter and the DC bus is connected to AC load through a voltage source inverter. A control strategy is implemented with fuzzy logic controller for smoothing of the power fluctuation and at the same time to maintain the battery state of charge (SOC) with in allowable limits. The various components are modeled and simulated in MATLAB/Simulink. Simulation results justify the ability of proposed controller to balance the power generation and load power.

To cut the cost of the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process, which is much higher than that of the traditional manufacturing process, an effective implementation of optimization analysis is needed. The study investigated the optimization of the LPBF Inconel 718 alloy with the Taguchi method and principal component analysis (PCA), covering four control factors at three levels in the manufacturing process. It focused on four mechanical properties, namely tensile strength, elongation, impact energy, and hardness. The results show that the highest tensile strength is obtainable at a laser power of 140 W, scanning speed of 800 mm/s, scanning pitch of 70 μm, and interlayer angle of 45 degrees. The optimal combination of process parameters for multiobjective optimization is just the same as that for single-objective optimization for tensile strength. The difference between the predicted and experimental average tensile strength is 1.2%, and the error of the predicted optimal strength index is 12.6%. The most important control factor for tensile strength and multiple responses is the angle between layers, with a contribution rate exceeding 90%. With a given volume energy density of the LPBF process, the higher the power and scanning speed, the higher the accumulated energy and the larger the amount of dendritic or cellular crystals formed.

Process Optimization of Inconel 718 Alloy Produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

This paper proposes robust control and power management strategies for a 6kW stationary fuel cell hybrid power system. The system consists of two 3kW PEMFC modules, a Li-Fe battery set and electrical components to form a parallel hybrid power system that is designed for telecom base stations to supply uninterruptible power during emergency power failures. The study is carried out in three steps: the PEMFC modules control, power management, and system integration. First, we apply robust control to regulate the hydrogen flow rates of the PEMFC modules to increase system stability, performance, and efficiency. Second, we design a parallel power train that consists of two PEMFC modules and one Li-Fe battery set for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) requirement. When the main power is shut down, the Li-Fe battery will activate PEMFC modules. Then the PEMFC modules provide steady power at low current loadings. At high loading, both PEMFC modules and the Li-Fe battery set will simultaneously provide electricity. Lastly, we integrate the system for experimental verification. Based on the results, the proposed robust control and power management are deemed effective in improving stability, performance and efficiency of the stationary power system.
