This chapter introduces the finite element method (FEM) as a tool for solution of classical electromagnetic problems. Although we discuss the main points in the application of the finite element method to electromagnetic design, including formulation and implementation, those who seek deeper understanding of the finite element method should consult some of the works listed in the bibliography section.

Nonlinear normal modes, Part I: A useful framework for the structural dynamicist

A method for determining reduced-order models for rotating beams is presented. The approach is based on the construction of nonlinear normal modes that are defined in terms of invariant manifolds that exist for the system equations of motion. The beam considered is an idealized model for a rotor blade whose motions are dominated by transverse vibrations in the direction perpendicular to the plane of rotation (known as flapping). The mathematical model for the rotating beam is relatively simple, but contains the nonlinear coupling that exists between transverse and axial deflections. When one employs standard modal expansion or finite element techniques to this system, this nonlinearity causes slow convergence, leading to models that require many degrees of freedom in order to achieve accurate dynamical representations. In contrast, the invariant manifold approach systematically accounts for the nonlinear coupling between linear modes, thereby providing models with very few degrees of freedom that accurately capture the essential dynamics of the system. Models with one and two nonlinear modes are considered, the latter being able to handle systems with internal resonances. Modal Reduction of a Nonlinear Rotating Beam Through Nonlinear Normal Modes

Nonlinear normal modes for vibratory systems under harmonic excitation

This paper describes a methodology for developing reduced-order dynamic models of structural systems that are composed of an assembly of nonlinear component structures. The approach is a nonlinear extension of the fixed-interface component mode synthesis (CMS) technique developed for linear structures by Hurty and modified by Craig and Bampton. Specifically, the case of nonlinear substructures is handled by using fixed-interface nonlinear normal modes (NNMs). These normal modes are constructed for the various substructures using an invariant manifold approach, and are then coupled through the traditional linear constraint modes (i.e., the static deformation shapes produced by unit interface displacements). A class of systems is used to demonstrate the concept and show the effectiveness of the proposed procedure. Simulation results show that the reduced-order model (ROM) obtained from the proposed procedure outperforms the ROM obtained from the classical fixed-interface linear CMS approach as applied to a nonlinear structure. The proposed method is readily applicable to large-scale nonlinear structural systems that are based on finite-element models.

Component mode synthesis using nonlinear normal modes

A nonlinear one-dimensional finite-element model representing the axial and transverse motions of a cantilevered rotating beam is reduced to a single nonlinear normal mode using invariant manifold techniques. This system is an idealized representation for large-amplitude vibrations of a rotorcraft blade. Although this model is relatively simple, it possesses the essential nonlinear coupling effects between the axial and transverse degrees of freedom. The nature of this coupling leads to the fact that we must use many degrees of freedom, whether based on finite elements or modal expansions, in order to accurately represent the beam vibrations. In this work, the slow modal convergence problem is overcome by nonlinear modal reduction that makes use of invariant manifold based nonlinear modes.
