Medicinal plants of India with anti-diabetic potential.

The contemporary scientific community has presently recognized flavonoids to be a unique class of therapeutic molecules due to their diverse therapeutic properties. Of these, rutin, also known as vitamin P or rutoside, has been explored for a number of pharmacological effects. Tea leaves, apples, and many more possess rutin as one of the active constituents. Today, rutin has been observed for its nutraceutical effect. The present review highlights current information and health-promoting effects of rutin. Along with this, safety pharmacology issues and SAR of the same have also been discussed.

Flavonoids are non-nutritive dietary components that are widely distributed in plants. The present study investigated the antihyperglycaemic and antioxidant effect of rutin, a polyphenolic flavonoid in normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic Wistar rats. Diabetes as induced in rats by an intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin. Rutin was orally administered to normal and diabetic rats for a period of 45 days. Fasting plasma glucose, glycosylated haemoglobin, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and lipid hydroperoxides were significantly (P<0.05) increased, whereas insulin, C-peptide, total haemoglobin, protein levels, non-enzymic antioxidants (glutathione, vitamin C, vitamin E and ceruloplasmin) were decreased significantly (P<0.05) in diabetic rats. Oral administration of rutin to diabetic rats significantly (P<0.05) decreased fasting plasma glucose, glycosylated haemoglobin and increased insulin, C-peptide, haemoglobin and protein levels. Administration of rutin also decreased thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and lipid hydroperoxides and increased the non-enzymic antioxidants significantly (P<0.05). Treatment of normal rats with rutin did not significantly (P<0.05) alter any of the parameters studied. These results show that rutin exhibits antihyperglycaemic and antioxidant activity in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

Hypoglycaemic activity of Syzigium cumini seeds: effect on lipid peroxidation in alloxan diabetic rats

The present study investigates the effect of oral administration of an alcoholic extract of Tinospora cordifolia roots on antioxidant defence in alloxan-induced diabetes in rats. A significant increase in the concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in brain along with a decrease in heart was observed in diabetic rats. Decreased concentration of glutathione (GSH) and decreased activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in heart and brain of diabetic rats were also noted. Alcoholic Tinospora cordifolia root extract (TCREt) administered at a dose of 100 mg/kg to diabetic rats orally for six weeks normalized the antioxidant status of heart and brain. The effect of T. cordifolia root extract was more prominent than glibenclamide (600 microg/kg). Insulin (6 units/kg) restored all the parameters to normal status.
