Air-to-air heat pumps in real-life use: Are potential savings achieved or are they transformed into increased comfort?
TL;DR: In this paper, individual air-to-air heat pumps in Danish dwellings and summer houses and the question of to what extent they actually deliver savings of energy consumption was investigated. And the results indicated that on average there is no reduction in electricity consumption, as energy efficiency is counter balanced by increased comfort and changed heating practices.
Air-to-air heat pumps: A wolf in sheep’s clothing?

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the effect of air-to-air heat pumps on the electricity consumption and the comfort of the occupants of dwellings and summer houses in Denmark, based on a survey and qualitative interviews with Danish owners.

Heat pumps and user practices – energy reductions or increased comfort?
TL;DR: For example, Larsen et al. as discussed by the authors showed that 40% of the expected reduction in electricity consumption is transferred into increased comfort in the homes, including increased heating areas, keeping a higher temperature and a longer heating season and using the heat pump for air-conditioning.
