Energy consumption, financial development and economic growth in India: New evidence from a nonlinear and asymmetric analysis.

This paper investigates the asymmetric relationship between energy consumption and economic growth by incorporating financial development, capital and labour into a production function covering the Indian economy from 1960Q1–2015Q4. The nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag bounds testing approach is applied to examine the asymmetric cointegration between the variables. An asymmetric causality test is also employed to examine the causal association between the considered variables. The results indicate cointegration between the variables in the presence of asymmetries. The asymmetric causality results show that only negative shocks in energy consumption have impacts on economic growth. In the same vein, only negative shocks in financial development have impacts on economic growth. By contrast, symmetrically, capital formation causes economic growth. Finally, over the study period, a neutral effect exists between the labour force and economic growth in India. The implications of these results for growth policies in India are also discussed.

Energy Consumption, Financial Development and Economic Growth in India: New Evidence from a Nonlinear and Asymmetric Analysis

In this study, we investigate the role of infrastructure in economic growth in India for the period 1970–2006 on the basis of the empirical framework developed by D.A. Aschauer (Is public expenditure productive? Journal of monetary economics, 23 (2), 1989, 177–200). In this context, we develop an index of infrastructure stocks and estimate growth-accounting equations to investigate the impact of infrastructure development on output. Overall, the results reveal that infrastructure stocks, labour force and total investment play an important role in economic growth in India. More importantly, we find that infrastructure development in India has a significant positive contribution toward growth than both private and public investments. Further, causality analysis shows that there is unidirectional causality from infrastructure development to output growth. Foreign Direct Investment in South Asia: Policy, Trends, Impact and Determinants

We examine the output elasticity of infrastructure for four South Asian countries viz., India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka using panel cointegration techniques for the period 1980–2005. In this context, we develop an index of infrastructure stocks and investigate the impact of infrastructure on output. The study finds a long-run equilibrium relationship between output and infrastructure along with other relevant variables, such as gross domestic capital formation (GDCF), labor force, international trade and human capital. The results reveal that GDCF, labor force, export and expenditure on human capital exhibit a positive contribution to output. More importantly, infrastructure development contributes significantly to output growth in South Asia. Further, the panel causality analysis shows that there is mutual feedback between total output and infrastructure development.

COVID-19 and Indian Economy: Impact on Growth, Manufacturing, Trade and MSME Sector

In this paper, we attempt to examine the export-led and manufacturing export-led growth hypothesis for four South Asian Countries; namely, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, using Pedroni’s panel cointegration technique for the period 1980–2002. In this context we estimate growth accounting equations to investigate the impact of exports, manufacturing exports and other important physical and human capital variables on both total GDP and non-export GDP. The study finds long-run equilibrium relationship between GDP (and non-export GDP) and exports along with other variables supporting export-led growth hypothesis. The results also substantiate the existence of manufacturing export-led growth hypothesis. Further, we find that export, fixed capital formation, public expenditure on health and education have statistically significant coefficients re-emphasizing the importance of these variables for higher economic growth.
