Summary The ethanolic extracts of the root of Saussurea lappa, was prepared and evaluated for their anticonvulsant activity. Both the maximal electro-shock induced convulsions and pentylenetetrazol-induced clonic convulsions methods were used for the evaluation of anticonvulsant activity in swiss albino mice. The ethanolic extract of the root exhibited significant anticonvulsant activity in both the test.

The seed extract was analysed on C18 column utilizing water and acetonitrile as mobile phase under isocratic elution at 220 nm, therefore this method can be used for standardization by estimation of convallatoxin, a cardenolide in Antiaris toxicaria.

The alkaloid saussurine, a biomarker of the plant Saussurea lappa which is pharmacologically active against asthma, has been isolated from authenticated samples (roots) of the plant by extraction and purification. The pure compound was then used for quantitative estimation of the alkaloid in S. lappa root powder and in a tablet formulation obtained from a local market, by means of a reversed-phase (RP) TLC method developed and validated in-house.
