Taking Arduino to the Internet of Things

The aim of this literature review is to examine the applications and researches related to the use of Arduino boards in learning and teaching environments. The study conducted a content review of 100 studies published between the years 2006-2016 by using the indexes of Educational Research Information Center (ERIC), Academic Search Complete,  Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), IEEE/IEL, Science Direct, Scopus, ProQuest, Google Scholar and Web of Science. In-depth examination showed that that there were various approaches and practices in the case of using Arduino technology in literature. The fact that Arduino-based robot projects spread quickly and effectively was the first thing that this study found. Due to the contribution of Arduino technology to design and development process of educational robotics system, this study revealed that recent studies mostly focused on the efforts of integration and implementation of Arduino boards into educational activities and curriculums. This study listed the academic disciplines in which the studies used Arduino boards for learning and teaching activities and revealed the achievements with the application of Arduino boards. This study also determined the research methods and technological tools used in the prior research and reported the difficulties and problems related to the use of the Arduino boards. Where does Arduino’s power come from?: An extended literature review

We present our approach to teaching functional programming to First Year Computer Science students at Middlesex University through projects in robotics. A holistic approach is taken to the curriculum, emphasising the connections between different subject areas. A key part of the students' learning is through practical projects that draw upon and integrate the taught material. To support these, we developed the Middlesex Robotic plaTfOrm (MIRTO), an open-source platform built using Raspberry Pi, Arduino, HUB-ee wheels and running Racket (a LISP dialect). In this paper we present the motivations for our choices and explain how a number of concepts of functional programming may be employed when programming robotic applications. We present some students' work with robotics projects: we consider the use of robotics projects to have been a success, both for their value in reinforcing students' understanding of programming concepts and for their value in motivating the students.

Teaching Functional Patterns through Robotic Applications

A novel approach to teaching Computer Science has been developed for the academic year 2013/14 at Middlesex University,
UK. The whole first year is taught in an holistic fashion, with programming at the core, using a number of practical projects to support learning and inspire the students. The Lisp derivative, Racket, has been chosen as the main programming language for the year. An important feature of the approach is the use of physical computing so that the students are not always working “through the screen”, but can experience physical manifestations of behaviours resulting from programs. In this paper we describe the MIddlesex Robotic plaTfOrm (MIRTO), an open-source platform built using Raspberry Pi, Arduino, and with Racket as the core coordination mechanism. We describe the architecture of the platform and how it can be used to support teaching of core Computer Science topics, we describe our teaching and assessment strategies, we present students’ projects and we provide a preliminary evaluation of our approach.
