Development of a multi-criteria approach for the selection of sustainable materials for building projects

Resources of an organisation (people, time, money, equipment, etc) are never endless. As such, a constant and continuous challenge for decision makers is to decide which projects should be given priority in terms of receiving critical resources in a way that the organisation's productivity and profitability is best guaranteed. Previous literature has already developed a plenitude of project portfolio selection methodologies ranging from simple scoring to complex mathematical models. However, most of them too often fail to propose one integrated and seamless method that can simultaneously take into account three important elements: (1) prioritisation of selection criteria over each other, (2) uncertainty in decision-making, and (3) projects interdependencies. This paper aims to fill this gap by proposing an integrated method that can simultaneously address all these three aspects. The proposed method combines Quality Function Development (QFD), fuzzy logic, and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to accounts for prioritisation, uncertainty and interdependency. We then apply this method in a numerical example from a real world case to illustrate the applicability and efficacy of the proposed methodology.

A methodology for project portfolio selection under criteria prioritisation, uncertainty and projects interdependency – combination of fuzzy QFD and DEA

Sustainable building design has become a wide and multidisciplinary research endeavor including mechanical, electrical, electronic, communication, acoustic, architectural, and structural engineering. It involves the participation of owners, contractors, suppliers and building users. There has been a lot of talk about sustainable buildings in the past few years. Most of the published research is concerned with saving energy and water and making the buildings more environmentally friendly by, say, reducing the carbon emissions. In this article, sustainable building design is reviewed from the viewpoint of structural engineering. Different strategies presented in the literature are summarized. Finally, the authors argue that the next big leap in sustainable building design should come from the integration of the smart structure technology including the use of hybrid and semi-active vibration controllers that can result in substantially lighter and more efficient structures.

Green hospital design: integrating quality function deployment and end-user demands

Dust pollution is a key issue that contractors ought to address in the sphere of sustainable construction. Governments on behalf of the public assume part of the responsibilities for minimizing dust emissions on construction sites. However, the measures that are useful for governments to fulfill such a responsibility have not been explored explicitly in previous studies. The aim of this research is to map out China’s practices in this area with the intention of filling the knowledge gap. Using a combination of research methods, five categories of governmental measures are proposed: technological, economic, supervisory, organizational, and assessment-based. Data from 37 major cities in China are collected for analysis. While the proposed categories of measures are demonstrated in China, the data analysis results show that governments prefer technological and organizational measures, and institutional guarantees and technological innovation are a prerequisite for dust-free construction. This research provides a comprehensive examination of construction dust control from the perspective of governments, and it can assist governments in improving the performance of dust management in the construction context.

Control Dust Pollution on Construction Sites: What Governments Do in China?

With the progress of science and technology, the concept of sustainable development is increasingly prevalent in the contemporary world. Under this circumstance, the green buildings, which play a crucial role in achieving the goal of sustainability, have become more in demand in the construction industry. Although the duration of the construction process is comparatively short in the life cycle of a project, the impact of the process on the surroundings is profound and lasting. In addition, a mass of resources and energy is consumed during the construction phase. Therefore, green construction programs should be applied and evaluated in order to reduce the environmental problems and resources consumption to achieve the goal of green building. Firstly, this study proposes an approach combining fuzzy set theory and quality function deployment (QFD) method to establish an evaluation model of the green construction program. Then value engineering method is introduced to solve the problem of the green construction alternatives optimization by the function-cost analysis. A Fuzzy-QFD Approach to the Assessment of Green Construction Alternatives Based on Value Engineering

According to the characteristics of green construction, this paper defines the key indexes in green construction assessment system which includes resources utilization, environmental protection and construction management. It also builds up green construction assessment model in which relationships among indexes are established. Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) optimized by genetic algorithm (GA) is used to assess green construction alternatives.
