Providing ubiquitous connectivity to diverse device types is the key challenge for 5G and beyond 5G (B5G). Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are expected to be an important component of the upcoming wireless networks that can potentially facilitate wireless broadcast and support high rate transmissions. Compared to the communications with fixed infrastructure, UAV has salient attributes, such as flexible deployment, strong line-of-sight (LoS) connection links, and additional design degrees of freedom with the controlled mobility. In this paper, a comprehensive survey on UAV communication towards 5G/B5G wireless networks is presented. We first briefly introduce essential background and the space-air-ground integrated networks, as well as discuss related research challenges faced by the emerging integrated network architecture. We then provide an exhaustive review of various 5G techniques based on UAV platforms, which we categorize by different domains including physical layer, network layer, and joint communication, computing and caching. In addition, a great number of open research problems are outlined and identified as possible future research directions.

UAV Communications for 5G and Beyond: Recent Advances and Future Trends

After implementing 5G technology, academia and industry started researching 6th generation wireless network technology (6G). 6G is expected to be implemented around the year 2030. It will offer a significant experience for everyone by enabling hyper-connectivity between people and everything. In addition, it is expected to extend mobile communication possibilities where earlier generations could not have developed. Several potential technologies are predicted to serve as the foundation of 6G networks. These include upcoming and current technologies such as post-quantum cryptography, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), enhanced edge computing, molecular communication, THz, visible light communication (VLC), and distributed ledger (DL) technologies such as blockchain. From a security and privacy perspective, these developments need a reconsideration of prior security traditional methods. New novel authentication, encryption, access control, communication, and malicious activity detection must satisfy the higher significant requirements of future networks. In addition, new security approaches are necessary to ensure trustworthiness and privacy. This paper provides insights into the critical problems and difficulties related to the security, privacy, and trust issues of 6G networks. Moreover, the standard technologies and security challenges per each technology are clarified. This paper introduces the 6G security architecture and improvements over the 5G architecture. We also introduce the security issues and challenges of the 6G physical layer. In addition, the AI/ML layers and the proposed security solution in each layer are studied. The paper summarizes the security evolution in legacy mobile networks and concludes with their security problems and the most essential 6G application services and their security requirements. Finally, this paper provides a complete discussion of 6G networks’ trustworthiness and solutions.

Security Requirements and Challenges of 6G Technologies and Applications

Driving safety is one of the most important points to concern on the road. Vehicles constantly generate messages under vehicle-to-everything (V2X) assisted driving. Especially, in dense urban environments, the massive messages carrying precise data can help us to improve road safety. However, vehicles do not always provide accurate data due to a variety of reasons, such as defective vehicle sensors, or selfish. It is critical to check and analyze the data supplied by vehicles in real time and correct the possible errors to eliminate the unsafe issues. In this article, we introduce a cOllaborative vehiClE dAta correctioN method (OCEAN) based on rationality and <inline-formula><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$Q$</tex-math></inline-formula>-learning techniques to correct the error V2X data for ensuring the driving safety of vehicles on the road, which can be deployed on both vehicles and road side unit. Extensive experimental results show that OCEAN can detect error V2X data up to 80<inline-formula><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\%$</tex-math></inline-formula> and cut down 60<inline-formula><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\%$</tex-math></inline-formula> average error distance for most attributes in vehicle data.

A Collaborative V2X Data Correction Method for Road Safety

Due to the rapid development of the fifth-generation (5G) applications, and increased demand for even faster communication networks, we expected to witness the birth of a new 6G technology within the next ten years. Many references suggested that the 6G wireless network standard may arrive around 2030. Therefore, this paper presents a critical analysis of 5G wireless networks’, significant technological limitations and reviews the anticipated challenges of the 6G communication networks. In this work, we have considered the applications of three of the highly demanding domains, namely: energy, Internet-of-Things (IoT) and machine learning. To this end, we present our vision on how the 6G communication networks should look like to support the applications of these domains. This work presents a thorough review of 370 papers on the application of energy, IoT and machine learning in 5G and 6G from three major libraries: Web of Science, ACM Digital Library, and IEEE Explore. The main contribution of this work is to provide a more comprehensive perspective, challenges, requirements, and context for potential work in the 6G communication standard.

From 5G to 6G Technology: Meets Energy, Internet-of-Things and Machine Learning: A Survey

Radio frequency fingerprint (RFF) identification is a popular topic in the field of physical layer security. However, machine learning based RFF identification methods require complicated feature extraction manually while deep learning based methods are hard to achieve robust identification performance. To solve these problems, we propose a novel RFF identification method based on heat constellation trace figure (HCTF) and slice integration cooperation (SIC). HCTF is utilized to avoid the manual feature extraction and SIC is adopted to extract more features automatically in RF signals. Experimental results show that our proposed HCTF-SIC identification method can achieve higher accuracy than the existing RFF methods. The identification accuracy achieves 91.07% when SNR <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\pmb {=}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> 0 dB and it is even higher than 99.64% when the SNR <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\pmb {\ge }$ </tex-math></inline-formula> 5 dB.
