The synergistic effects of the micro-BN and nano-Al2O3 in micro-nano composites on enhancing the thermal conductivity for insulating epoxy resin

Extruded polymeric HVDC cables have drawn great attention in modern power systems. This paper reviews the history and development of the polymeric HVDC cables and summarizes the key technical problems in extruded HVDC cables. It is pointed out that two key issues should be solved. One is the electric field inversion within HVDC cable insulation which is caused by the temperature and electric field dependent DC volume resistivity of the polymeric insulation materials. The other is the space charge behavior under multi-fields coupling, including charge injection, transportation, accumulation and dissipation characteristics. The following aspects need to be particularly concerned in the future: the interaction between temperature, electric field, space charge and DC volume resistivity under multi-fields coupling; mechanisms of nanoparticles doping on enhancing the properties of polymeric insulation material; the long-term operation characteristics of nanodielectrics; collaborative optimal regulation methods and theories on the properties of polymeric insulation material; and recyclable insulation materials for future HVDC cables.

Polymeric insulation materials for HVDC cables: Development, challenges and future perspective

Polypropylene (PP) has shown great potential as recyclable HVDC cable insulation material. This paper aims to investigate the effect of different nanoparticles on tuning the electrical properties of PP. Surface modified MgO, TiO 2 , ZnO and Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles with various contents were melt blended with PP. The microstructural morphology, dielectric properties, DC volume resistivity, space charge behavior and DC breakdown strength of the nanocomposites were investigated. It was found that the dielectric permittivity all increases with the increase of nanoparticle content, only the dielectric loss of TiO 2 /PP nanocomposites increases. For MgO and TiO 2 nanocomposites, the DC volume resistivity increases with the increase of nanoparticle content and then decreases, while it continues to increase for Al 2 O 3 nanocomposite. TiO 2 /PP nanocomposite with 5 phr nano-TiO 2 shows lower volume resistivity than PP. Space charge suppression and DC electric breakdown strength show similar variation trend, both increase with the increase of nanoparticle content and then decrease. MgO and TiO 2 nanocomposites show the most obvious space charge suppression and TiO 2 nanocomposites exhibit the highest DC breakdown strength, which is 43% higher than that of pure PP. Considering the electrical properties investigated, the optimal content for MgO, TiO 2 , ZnO and Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles is about 3, 1, 1 and 1 phr, respectively. Among these four kinds of nanoparticles, MgO and TiO2 nanoparticles are more capable than ZnO and Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles to modify the electrical properties of PP and more potential to be used as recyclable HVDC cable insulation material.

Effect of different nanoparticles on tuning electrical properties of polypropylene nanocomposites

Polymer nanocomposites can change the density and/or energy of traps, suppress the accumulation of space charges, and enhance dielectric breakdown strength. It is of interest to reveal the influencing mechanism of trap properties on the dielectric breakdown of polymer nanocomposites. Results of thermally stimulated depolarization current and surface potential decay were reviewed, showing that incorporating a small amount of nanoparticles into a polymer can increase the density and/or energy of deep traps. Then, the relation between traps and dc breakdown field of several polymer nanocomposites were analyzed. It was found that the increase in the density and energy of deep traps contributes to the improved dielectric breakdown performance. The modifications of traps by nanoparticles and surface treatments affect the charge dynamics in the bulk of polymer nanocomposites. Then, the accumulation of space charges, the distortion of electric field, and the energy gain of free carriers are regulated to improve the performance of dielectric breakdown.

Linking traps to dielectric breakdown through charge dynamics for polymer nanocomposites

Polyethylene nanocomposites based on functionalized ZnO nano/hierarchical particles with highly effective interfacial surface area are presented, for the next generation of ultralow transmission-loss high-voltage DC insulating materials.

Highly Efficient Interfaces in Nanocomposites Based on Polyethylene and ZnO Nano/Hierarchical Particles: A Novel Approach toward Ultralow Electrical Conductivity Insulations.

In order to investigate the effect of inorganic nanoparticle fillers on the electrical properties of low density polyethylene (LDPE), LDPE/ZnO nanocomposites were prepared with a variety of filler loadings by melt blending method and the corresponding electrical properties are investigated. Experiments show that, the trap density is increased by 3-5 times in the nanocomposite as compared with LDPE. The conduction current of the nanocomposite is decreased to 0.5 - 0.25 of the value of LDPE both at low and high electric fields. The electrical breakdown strength is increased at low filler contents and decreased at high contents (>;1 wt%). The electrical treeing life time is elongated 50 times at most in the nanocomposites. Both homo- and hetero-space charges are remarkably suppressed in the nanocomposite with 0.5 and 7 wt% contents. The study indicates that the improvements on the electrical properties, especially the charge transport and space charge suppression in the nanocomposites are closely related to the significant increase of deep trap density. The effect of UV light absorption and electric field homogenization by ZnO can also contribute to the enhancement of electrical breakdown strength and elongation of electrical treeing life.

Investigation of electrical properties of LDPE/ZnO nanocomposite dielectrics

This study intends to establish the correlation between charging current under stepwise increased electric field and space charge formation in low density polyethylene (LDPE) and LDPE/ZnO nanocomposites. By applying stepwise increased electric field, the charging current and space charge distribution were measured as a function of time under 10, 30 and 50 kV/mm, respectively. The results show that homopolar space charge formation induces increasing charging current with time, while heteropolar space charge formation induces decaying charging current and excellent space charge suppression is accompanied by constant charging current with time. The abundant deep trapping states introduced by nanofillers dominate both the lower steady charging current and space charge suppression in the nanocomposite. The results indicate that charging current behavior induced by stepwise increased electric field is extremely informative and is feasible to be a direct method for rough estimation of space charge formation and suppression in polymer dielectrics. Addition of ZnO nanofillers suppresses space charge accumulation in LDPE, indicating LDPE/ZnO nanocomposite is a potential insulation material for high voltage direction current cables.
